I'm guessing the 90 HPT (give or take) is probably sufficient to keep the West Local moving up the grade of the Moffat. The local is actually not headed for the Rocky Spur on this particular Wednesday. It is instead headed for East Portal! The tank car is filled with gas for the backup generator for the Moffat Tunnel's ventilation system.

The West Local crosses 80th Avenue on the approach to the east switch of Leyden. The crew is looking at a yellow (approach) signal and will stopped for a few minutes at the west end to allow a track inspector to clear up off the track.

A single ES44C4 bring up the tail end of the Provo-Denver trackage rights manifest at Leyden. The BNSF manifests that run on the Moffat are generally dominated by tank cars and this one is no exception.

The West Local kicks up some snow at Leyden as it makes a late afternoon journey westward. With the cleanup of Rocky Flats long since complete and the loss of a customer (Mesa Oil moved from their location on Chem Spur), there is only one customer left for the local to serve. The aggregate plant at the north end of the Rocky Spur. With the loss of business and decrease in rail demand, this is only the second West Local of the year! And it only has five covered hoppers.

How's this for an interesting site!? The MRONYX (Extra Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) has a sole DPU on the tail end...well, almost the tail end! A single covered hopper is behind the unit. Most likely, this covered hopper was picked up by the train somewhere between Grand Junction and Denver.

The classic Rio Grande searchlight signals that have stood for decades at East Leyden won't be standing much longer! As you can see in this picture, new signals have been erected and are merely waiting to be activated. Once that is done, the old signals will come down.

The new signal control box at East Leyden will be located on the (geographic) west side of the tracks instead of the east side of the tracks as the old control box is. This does make sense as signal crews will be able to access the box from the maintenance road without having to cross the tracks.

As sunlight starts to come over the hill, the work at East Leyden is apparent. UP is in the process of replacing the signals at the east switch. West Crescent and East Cliff were the first signals to be replaced along the Moffat. That happened nearly 15 years ago! Now, some of the last Rio Grande signals will come down, giving way to new, taller, brighter, LED signals.

On my way to work, I stopped by East Leyden and got a few pictures of the work UP is doing to install new signals. This is likely the last picture I'll ever take of the classic Rio Grande signal standing alone. By this afternoon, the new signal (laying on the ground in this shot) will be erected (behind the existing signal), turned off to the side until it is time to activate it.

UP has erected a new eastbound signal on the main at East Leyden. While I am sad to see the classic Rio Grande signals go, it is always good to see investment in the Moffat. In addition, crews will no doubt be very happen to have new, bright LED signals that can be seen much clearer than the old signals.

The new signal control box at East Leyden has been placed on the opposite side of the tracks from the original signal box (visible next to the signal in this shot). Dozens of cables containing wiring for the new signals are visible on the ground, waiting to be connected in the signal box and buried in the ground.

It was bound to happen sooner or later, particularly with Positive Train Control (PTC) right on the horizon! Union Pacific is in the process of replacing the signals at East Leyden. Other than the signals around North Yard, these will be the last Rio Grande signals between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel to be replaced. The signal laying on the ground in the foreground is the signal for the siding.

Afternoon clouds are moving in and blocking the sun as the eastbound California Zephyr departs the siding at Leyden eastbound. A westbound BNSF manifest was holding the main at Leyden, forcing the Zephyr to run through the siding. The train is running close to on time and hopefully its stop in Denver will not change that.

The MNYRO charges west on a clear signal at east Leyden. UP has changed the call time for this train over the years, and it seems like they may be going with an early morning call time again. That suits me just fine, as it gives me an opportunity to get a shot before work. Note the MP15N in the consist which will likely be set out in Grand Junction.

It's 2015 and classic Rio Grande (well, Denver and Salt Lake) searchlight signal still stands at the east switch of Leyden. It was once explained to me by a member of UP's signal gang that the signal somehow ties in with the grade crossing at 80th Avenue, making it difficult to replace. I have no idea if that information was accurate, but regardless, it is good to find one spot that still has a classic signal standing!
