In the OS at the east switch of Leyden, two ES44ACs with an SD70ACe sandwiched between them lead the eastbound HPVODEN. After meeting two trains at Rocky, the manifest now has a straight shot the rest of the way in to the yard in Denver. As is extremely common in summer, clouds are forming over the Rockies to the west, and will like come spilling out over the plains this afternoon.

Couldn't ask for better lighting here at the east switch of Leyden as UP's thrice-weekly Grand Junction, CO to Denver, CO (MGJNY) manifest approaches a clear (green) signal. This is the only regularly-scheduled UP manifest train that still runs on the Moffat.

A trio of elephant-style units lead an eastbound loaded oil train out the east end of Leyden on a beautiful Spring day in April. The trees have not yet sprouted leaves, but it should only be another few weeks before they are green once again.

Since last weekend, both P42DCs of the Winter Park Express were changed out. AMTK 142 and 192 were in charge of the five car train last weekend. This morning, AMTK 153 and 27 are running on the Ski Train. It is a bit late (due to a mechanical issue), but is now charging west through the OS at East Leyden.

The biggest blizzard of the winter thus far has hit! In addition to the falling snow, it is a very cold -5°F (-21°C). The signal at the east end of Leyden show a clear (green over red) signal for the morning Zephyr.

You can clear see the derail is set here at the east end of Leyden as a 6,400 foot long string of empty well cars sits in the siding without power. It appears that there will be no meets here at Leyden for the foreseeable future, as these cars appears to be in storage.

An ET44AC and a AC4400CW bring up the tail end of an eastbound loaded oil train at the east switch of Leyden. The train is headed to one of the Bypass tracks in Denver where on of the two DPUs here will be removed before the train continues its journey east.

In the middle of fall, the Zephyr was consistently running with six Superliners (two sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and two coaches). Once we got in to November, a transition sleeper showed up, giving the train seven Superliners. On this morning, there is actually a third coach, so the train has eight Superliners as it highballs east Leyden.

Running right on time, the westbound Zephyr approach a clear (green) signal at the east switch of Leyden. The train is crossing the grade crossing at 80th Avenue. Indeed, you can tell that the ditch lights are currently oscillating as the result of the horn being blown for the grade crossing.

In the past eight years, GE has produced 1,117 "Tier 4" units for US railroads, including 300 for BNSF. That may seem like a lot, but when you consider the immediate predecessor (ES44AC/DC/C4) had 6,451 units produced, you can see the difference. The train held for about 15 minutes at east Leyden while waiting for maintenance to clear up.

The Moffat has been averaging one oil train each direction per day for the past few months. BNSF seems to be averaging one oil train each way every other day. Not long before sunset, an eastbound oil train crosses 80th Avenue, leaving Leyden behind, as it continues toward Denver and points east.

BNSF 5260 is looking at an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) here at this signal at east Leyden. However, while the train has a signal that would allow it to proceed, it is currently stopped for reasons that were not clear.

A pair of nicely painted UP units leads an 11 car Officer's Special passenger train east out of Leyden. This would end up being one of four passenger trains to run on the Moffat on this day. Earlier, the westbound Zephyr and the westbound Rocky Mountaineer ran. Later in the evening, the eastbound Zephyr would also come through.

After decades of seeing flags on the nose of approaching UP units, it is time to go back to mostly yellow with the UP Shield. UP has updated their official paint scheme, and UP 6454 is sporting it as it leads an Officer's Special east through Leyden. It will continue on to Cheyenne today and ultimately back to Omaha, NE.
