The Westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at East Leyden as it also kicks up some snow on the journey west. More than likely the third P42DC is isolated (not doing any work) and catching a free ride out to California.

Three P42DCs leads the Westbound Zephyr at Leyden the morning after a quick late Winter blizzard blew through. 24 hours earlier, there wasn't a flake of snow in sight. It actually rained some before the snow started, resulting in the snow really sticking well to the trees, making for a Winter Wonderland.

As the days gets longer, the sun has been rising earlier, allowing for more light for shots like this one at Leyden. However, in two weeks when Daylight Savings Time starts, this scene will look much different. For now, the Winter Park Express kicks up snow at Leyden as the Denver skyline stands tall in the distance.

The westbound Winter Park Express has AMTK 193 on point this morning as the train knocks down a clear signal at Leyden. AMTK 156 (the Bloody Nose P42DC) will lead the train for the trip back to Denver in the evening.

A light dusting of snow lay all over the ground across Denver-Metro area. Passengers on the Winter Park Express are probably very happy to be inside the warm Superliners rather than outside in the 15°F weather!

AMTK 156 leads the westbound Winter Park Express on a frigid February morning. Some light snow fell overnight, laying down a nice dusting of white.

It seems that oil traffic is picking up a bit in Utah lately. BNSF has sent several loaded sand trains (for fracking) west and several loaded oil trains have rolled east. Another sand train went west on this day, headed for Wellington, UT.

The West Local now serves one (and only one) industry...an aggregate plant at the far end of the Rocky Spur. If that plant goes belly up, it'll likely spell the end of the West Local. As it is, the train only runs on Wednesdays...and not every Wednesday! A pair of covered hoppers is all it had to bring back to North Yard on this day.

"UP 1422, leaving Leyden on an advanced approach". The West Local, with a pair of covered hoppers, is leaving Leyden after meeting one westbound. The train will diverge from the Main to Main 2 to Arvada, and then the North Yard Siding at C&S Junction. It will enter the Storage Yard at the north end of North Yard to spot the cars before calling it a day.

Light is rapidly vanishing from the sky as a BNSF Provo-Denver sits at a red signal in the siding at Leyden. The train has actually been here for about five hours. BNSF had "no room at the inn", holding the train out here at Leyden until some space could be made. A new crew is onboard now, but DS-86 will get the eastbound Zephyr around the train before getting it a light to continue east.

The westbound Zephyr, with seven Superliners, passes by the somewhat woodsy east end of Leyden. The seen makes this area appear to be a bit more remote, perhaps, then is actually is.

The westbound Zephyr is coming up to milepost 12 at the east end of Leyden. The train is accelerating toward the track speed of 60 MPH here. In about 4 miles, however, he'll have to slow down to 30 MPH.

There was a relatively brief period in 2015, when oil prices were much higher, it looked as though oil trains might become a regular staple on the Moffat. Both BNSF and UP seemed to run about one a week. However, when prices dropped and it became less economical to ship by rail, the new trains all but evaporated! BNSF still runs one...occasionally...though they are hard to predict. One happened to be rolling east here at Leyden on Martin Luther King Day.
