The train has actually been here for about five hours. BNSF had "no room at the inn", holding the train out here at Leyden until some space could be made. A new crew is onboard now, but DS-86 will get the eastbound Zephyr around the train before getting it a light to continue east. The train is accelerating toward the track speed of 60 MPH here. In about 4 miles, however, he'll have to slow down to 30 MPH. Both BNSF and UP seemed to run about one a week. However, when prices dropped and it became less economical to ship by rail, the new trains all but evaporated! BNSF still runs one...occasionally...though they are hard to predict. One happened to be rolling east here at Leyden on Martin Luther King Day. Temperatures have been in the 50°Fs on a fairly regular basis and snow has been all but non-existent. It was reported that there were some issues with the gates and, as such, the Zephyr had to slow to 15 MPH to ensure the crossing was clear of cars. DS-86 had issued a crossing protection order for the grade crossing at Simms Street, but the crossing was repaired and the dispatcher contacted the conductor and was voiding the order right around the time this shot was being taken. Had the order not been voided, the train would have had to come to a stop at Simms Street to have the conductor protected the crossing as the train entered it. I don't specifically recall the last time I saw two C44-9Ws, both in Heritage 2 paint, leading a BNSF train on the Moffat (or anywhere, for that matter).
