DS-86 had issued a crossing protection order for the grade crossing at Simms Street, but the crossing was repaired and the dispatcher contacted the conductor and was voiding the order right around the time this shot was being taken. Had the order not been voided, the train would have had to come to a stop at Simms Street to have the conductor protected the crossing as the train entered it. I don't specifically recall the last time I saw two C44-9Ws, both in Heritage 2 paint, leading a BNSF train on the Moffat (or anywhere, for that matter). Taking advantage of that fact, I set up for this shot of the Zephyr on a crystal clear Monday morning. A bit of low-lying mist is hanging around the Denver-metro area. Denver hasn't had more than a trace of snow since October 9th! Meanwhile, a unit sand track (with some borrowed power from BNSF) heads west on the main at East Leyden. A lot of it! The MNYPHX had a bunch of loaded cars a week ago or so. And then, overnight, a 113-car, 12,400-ton unit sand train arrived at North Yard. It was rumored the train would go west with a 3x4x2 power configuration. However, the powers that be decided to split the train in two. Here, the first half (51 cars) are headed west at Leyden in a 3x(0)x2 configuration. The rest of the hoppers will go west on the MNYPHX. A trio of SD70s lead the train, albeit each one being a slightly different model. An SD70ACe is on the point, followed by a Phase 1 SD70M, and finally a Phase 2 SD70M. The last eastbound to run over the Moffat prior to a week of maintenance. The track is already out of service from Rocky all the way to Phippsburg. Work crews are slowly setting on the rails in order to start the maintenance. A lot of ties are going to be replaced through this stretch of track between now and October 8th. While coal traffic is nothing like it was ten years earlier, coal trains are showing up several a week. During the winter prior, coal traffic was down to as few as one train every 1-2 weeks! They became a little jaded after the last one required four crews to ultimately go nowhere! The story goes that there were some open-top auto racks with Humvees in them. The car department was inspecting the cars to ensure they'd fit through the tunnels while the train was in North Yard. That was the first crew. The second crew was called and the train headed west, but tripped a high-wide detector in Arvada. So the train stopped at Rocky and waiting for the car department, who came out and again measured the cars. A third crew was called to take the train west...but a few of the Humvees were in fact too tall and just scraped the top of Tunnel 10. The train was tied down at Crescent and waited for a fourth crew. The car department let the air out of the tires of the Humvees and the train was able to return to Denver and ultimately go through Wyoming. Case-in-point is this military train, headed for Yermo, CA. The train is taking the siding at Leyden to meet an eastbound coal load.
