The Zephyr has a clear signal at the west end of Leyden as it prepares to take on the Rocky Mountains. In the distance, to the left of the Zephyr, you can clearly see the hopper cars on Big Ten Loop.

Seven Superliners is a pretty typical consist for the Zephyr in the winter months as this time of year tends to see fewer bookings. The train is charging west at about 60 MPH (track speed) as it hustles through Leyden. The train has to take advantage of the higher track speed while it can, because in another four miles or so, it's time to slow to about 30 MPH!

12 1/2 miles west of Denver Union Station, the standard pair of P42DCs have the westbound Zephyr running right on time on a clear January morning.

A pair of ES44ACs bring up the tail end of this eastbound oil train at Leyden. The temperature outside is about 28°F and quite a bit of snow is still on the ground from the weekend snow storm.

As time marches onward, I like to get shots of defunct paint schemes when I can as they aren't going to last forever! And, as such, here is a shot of a "green and cream" SD70MAC.

For the second time in nine days, BNSF ran a loaded oil train over the Moffat. The power for this train was the same as the power on a loaded sand train that ran west four three days earlier. Efficient use of power! The fact that BNSF ran a sand train west suggests that another oil train (or several more oil trains) will be coming.

A westbound BNSF sand train has a "pre-production" ES44AC on the point. The very first ES44ACs that BNSF got from GE were painted in the Heritage 2 scheme. They were released just before the "New Image" or "Swoosh" scheme came out.

BNSF sent a loaded sand train west out of Denver during this great January blizzard. The train, rolling very slowly west at Leyden, has a "cigar band" (pre-production) ES44AC on the point, leading an ES44C4 and an SD70ACe.

2016 was the lowest coal-producing year in Colorado in decades. 2017 definitely saw a bit of a rebound as coal production increased by roughly 20% over 2016. The West Elk Mine and Energy Mine both seemed to secure new contracts as new train symbols have been showing up on the Moffat. That 20% increase comes despite the Cherokee power plant in northeast Denver and the Valmont power plant in Boulder switching from Colorado coal to natural gas. This train, originating off UP in the east, heads west at Leyden for the West Elk Mine.

A westbound coal empty meets an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest at Leyden. The coal empty is headed for the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch. For the trip east, two of these units will be on the east end, three will be mid-train DPUs, and one will be the sole DPU on the tail end.

It is also worth mentioning that this picture marks the 7000th picture on ColoradoRailfan.com!

It is not super common to find a train with a single engine on the point, particularly on the Moffat. However, when BNSF runs an empty sand train, the power tends to be configured with one unit on the point and a single DPU on the back. All these covered hoppers are empty, so the train is (relatively) light.

After a snowstorm 24 hours earlier, the storm and clouds moved out overnight, bringing in an arctic chill! An eastbound empty BNSF sand train rolls east on a yellow signal at Leyden in the morning light of the 7°F day.

Despite the fact that "green and cream" SD70MACs were very plentiful on Joint Line coal trains, these units have never had much of a presence on BNSF trains on the Moffat. So it is always nice to come across one, such as on this eastbound oil train that is headed out of Leyden. The SD70MAC is the final DPU on the train.

Finally! Snow! It has been 25 days since there was any measurable snow in the Denver-Metro area, but a quick moving storm dropped several inches of the white stuff on this day. An eastbound BNSF loaded oil train rolls down the main at Leyden on a clear signal.

An eastbound BNSF oil train, which loaded in Wellington, UT, makes it way through some freshly fallen snow at Leyden. A few flakes are still falling, though the storm is starting to wind down. It was a chilly 17°F out!
