Being an EMD guy, it is a great thing to see (and hear). An example was this (rather grungy) SD70ACe, acting as the sole DPU on the end of an eastbound coal load at Leyden. All three will be cut out of the train in Denver and the train will continue east in a 2x0x1 configuration. Of note, the third DPU here (UP 6315) started life as SP 269. The neighborhood to the left ("Five Parks") was built just shy of 15 years ago. Back when the Rocky Flats cleanup project was underway, it was not uncommon to find a string of covered hoppers tied down on the house track. In the distance, you can see the hoppers that are welded to the rails on the side of Big Ten Curve. Interestingly, I just shot UP 5895 (the trailing unit) three days earlier on the point of an eastbound coal load! This train came from Kinder Morgan in Houston, TX and is headed for the loadout at Energy. Somebody is going to have a little hostling of power to do in Phippsburg. Energy Mine does not have a balloon track, so the power on the tail end when the train arrives becomes the lead power when the train departs! Phase I and Phase II Heritage P42DC's lead the Zephyr at Leyden. The Zephyr is running about 3 1/2 hours late this morning, about 90 minutes of that due to a Vice Presidential Motorcade. VP Biden was in town and his motorcade route traversed I-25 over the tracks. Consequently, the Secret Service wasn't allowing any trains under the bridge. As I was growing up, my dad had a picture he shot of an eastbound Rio Grande coal train coming through this exact spot. In this shot, it is a westbound moving away from the camera. The only thing that may have made this better is if this was an eastbound instead of a westbound. Here, the MNYRO is in the siding with a red signal dead ahead. The unit wouldn't load due to high voltage problems. The locomotive help desk determined the lead unit should be isolated and just used for controlling the train on the journey west. Two SD70M's on a coal train in 2010? That was the first thought I had when I saw this train coming. Then, I realized that it is in fact a loaded ballast train headed for Grand Junction. There have been a lot of work windows on the Moffat lately during daylight hours. Once Amtrak comes through, the railroad more or less shuts down (for trains). The MNYRO was a little delayed getting out of the yard and thus had to spend the day at Leyden until the main was opened again in the evening. On this particular day, the train is over 6,000 feet long with 96 cars! There are two more units DPU'd on the tail end of the train.
