This eastbound BNSF Provo-Lincoln is approaching a clear signal at the east end of Leyden. Highball! On occasion, BNSF manifests will get stuck at Leyden if the yard in Denver has no room for them. Fortunately for the crew today, the yard was ready and the train got a straight shot in.

A visitor from the north...sort of...In 1998, Canadian National purchased the Illinois Central railroad. However, CN still identifies the former IC units on its roster. This C40-8W is one of only 42 such units Illinois Central had. Although it now wears standard Canadian National colors, a small "IC" is painted on the cab, indicating the heritage of the unit.

This is a new perspective of West Leyden for me. We are looking across the field from one of the open trails in the new neighborhood of Leyden Ranch. This coal load is headed for the Gulf Coast for export.

An SD70MAC (in the "green and cream" scheme) and an SD70ACe bring up the tail end of a westbound sand train as it leaves the west end of Leyden. The train is going to be slow rolling on its journey west up the hill.

After meeting a pair of eastbounds at Leyden, this westbound BNSF manifest is back on the roll on clear signals. A lucky morning as BNSF 777, still in great Warbonnet paint, brought up the tail end of the train.

On a beautiful December morning, under partly cloudy skies, a westbound BNSF manifest departs the siding at Leyden. A good looking Warbonnet (with lucky 7's) is the sole DPU on the tail end of the train.

DPU on the back of a westbound? Nope! This is actually the sole unit on the point of this eastbound unit covered hopper train! These are empty sand cars coming back east from Utah. The train actually does have a single DPU on the end, so it is configured 1x1.

After being spoiled with unseasonably warm temperatures, the 28°F on the thermometer is closer to the norm for December as an eastbound UP manifest rolls down the main at West Leyden. An ES44AC and SD70M make for an interesting pairing on this Roper to North Yard train.

An eastbound MRONY has an approach signal (yellow over red) as it comes up to the west switch of Leyden. The manifest is meeting a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo manifest that has just entered the siding at the east end.

It's pretty crazy just how much the city of Arvada (suburb of Denver) has grown in the past twenty years. In 1997, Leyden was practically out in the middle of nowhere. Just a few houses, many with pastures for horses, around. Now, there are five major neighborhoods surrounding Leyden as well as one of Arvada's four high schools (Ralston Valley). An eastbound BNSF manifest takes the siding, skirting the south edge of one of the neighborhoods: The Village at Five Parks.

BNSF's Provo to Denver manifest has a trio of elephant-style GEs leading it into the siding at Leyden. DS-86 aligned the train into the siding with the intention holding it for Amtrak. However, the train made better-than-expected time down the east slope of the Moffat. As a result, DS-86 already has a clear signal setup for the train out the east end. The train will meet the Zephyr at C&S Junction. Note the sole DPU on the end of the (relatively short) train on the right side of the shot.

An eastbound BNSF manifest is approaching the west switch at Leyden. There, it will actually enter the siding. The signal for the siding (well, for westbounds) is visible on the right side of this shot. Note the sign indicating the control point for West Leyden: CP DS013.

In two minutes, this scene will lose all of its direct sunlight! This MNYRO has six units on the head end and another two DPU'd on the back. That is because the train is roughly 9,000 feet in length. That has been UP's philosophy lately with the manifests between Denver and Roper. Instead of running them six days a week, they are running them three days a week, but doubling their length.
