The extension of the siding of Broomfield to the north is proceeding nicely! As you can see, the (concrete) ties and rails have been placed up to the new north switch. That's about 3,000 feet of track. Up next will be ballast to raise the siding up and smooth out the grade.

A pair of GE B-units arrive at the siding of Broomfield, headed south. These units ran light out of Longmont in order to switch some along the Front Range Sub. The light power is headed to the south end of the siding where they will wait for two northbounds. This B40-8W was delivered new to Santa Fe in October of 1990.

BNSF runs a daily manifest (each way) between Denver, CO and Laurel, MT. On this particular July afternoon, a trio of GEs leads the northbound version of the train out of the siding at Broomfield. The train has a warrant as far as MP 38, south of Longmont. Before it gets there, however, maintenance (currently on the tracks) will clear up and the train will be able to continue north toward Cheyenne (its next crew change location).

This northbound has come to a stop at the north end of the siding of Broomfield. Soon, this will no longer be the north end of Broomfield! The track to the left leads to the Lafayette Branch. If you look closely, you'll see a new switch has been installed on the branch. The diverging route leads to the branch, and the straight route currently comes to a dead end. This will all be a part of the Broomfield siding as the siding is extended to the north. This train, the HDENLAU (Denver, CO to Laurel, MT) is waiting for the southbound Valmont coal empty.

Within the last week or so, the new north switch of Broomfield has been installed! As you can see, the diverging route leads to nowhere right now. But the grading for the siding is nearly complete! Rumor has it that BNSF track gangs will be showing up soon to get the new siding extension built.

On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, BNSF's Buck Local sits tucked away at the south end of the Lafayette Branch. There is a southbound on the siding at Broomfield (which the Lafayette Branch connects with), so the local has nowhere to go. In the foreground, the north siding switch of Broomfield. Soon, this switch will be moved about 4,000 feet north of the its currently location.

BNSF's "Longmont Switch" has completed its work at Broomfield and is now on its way back to Longmont. The train just passed underneath the Northwest Parkway and is approaching the south end of Louisville. Note that there is actually a caboose (now referred to as a "shoving platform") on the tail end of the train.

At the north siding switch of Broomfield, the southbound Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest takes a "sharp left" and heads in to the siding. The "sharp left" is in railroad terms, of course. The siding and the main at Broomfield are, for the most part, on separate grades and there is quite a bit of distance between them in places. The first of two northbounds the HLAUDEN will meet is sitting on the main, waiting for the train to get in the clear and then to get a track warrant to proceed north.

BNSF's HLAUDEN (High Priority Manifest, Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) is approach the north switch of Broomfield with a very colorful consist. The green "Southern" heritage unit is the third Norfolk Southern heritage unit that I've been fortunate to catch in Colorado. Fairly impressive when there are only 20 of them for a railroad whose nearest rails are in Kansas City!

A northbound BNSF manifest approaches the Northwest Parkway underpass in Broomfield, not far south of Louisville. The apartment and condo complex in the background is very new. Ten years ago, none of that had been built and that area was occupied by an empty field.

Being a rather cold and gloomy day, black and white felt appropriate for this shot as a northbound BNSF manifest passes by a lone tree near recently constructed apartments and condos.

Occasionally, BNSF will send a coal empty north to the Powder River Basin in Wyoming on the Front Range Sub instead of the Brush Sub. Such was the case on this morning. This coal empty is following another northbound and already has a warrant to continue north out of the siding.

The Buck Local brought cars along from Longmont when it arrived at Broomfield. Several cars did not need to go down the Lafayette branch, so the local got permission from the dispatcher to leave the cars sitting out on the main track. Fortunately, the dispatcher didn't have anything coming out of town immediately, so this did not cause any bottlenecks. Here, the train has dropped off its caboose on the Lafayette branch and is picking up its train on the main.
