The MGJNY this morning has a Phase 2 SD70M and an SD70ACe-T4 as the last two units on the head end. Turned out, however, that both of these units are offline and just catching a lift on the manifest to Denver.

Five units lead this eastbound UP MGJNY on the main at Eisele (Clay). The train just met the westbound Zephyr, which is still visible on the far right side of the frame. Once the manifest clears the west switch, the Zephyr will get a clear signal to continue west.

For the first time in its three year history, the Winter Park Express includes a Sightseer Lounge car, providing for snacks for skiers heading to and from Winter Park. In its first two season, the train only had Coach Superliners.

The shoulder of CO-72 just west of CO-93 is a great place to pull over and watch trains as they move along the base of the Rockies at Eisele (formerly Clay), just west of Big Ten Loop. Here, a west coal empty heads west on the main.

The coach cars making up the circus train make a silver streak in the morning sunlight on the main at Eisele. The circus train is the longest private passenger train in the United States, coming in at 60 cars! It is over half a mile long.

The westbound Zephyr, running just a few minutes late, heads west on the main at Eisele (formerly Clay). The train consists of seven Superliners, which is fairly typical for winter months when demand is a little lower. You may also note that both units on the point are wearing the Phase III heritage scheme!

The westbound MNYRO is actually headed north (geographically) as it runs through Eisele. Just a few minutes earlier, the train was at Rocky on the track below. While this is only a few hundred feet going up the mountain side, it is roughly two miles by rail!

Empty rails? Not quite! If you look off in the distance, you can see the westbound California Zephyr moving along on the main at Clay. The bridge in the foreground runs over Indiana Street just west of Leyden.

The California Zephyr is running right on time as it heads west through Clay. The morning sun on the plains would quickly become obscured by clouds when heading into the high country.
