Talk about a unique and colorful consist! On a partly cloudy July afternoon, a westbound BNSF manifest is led by a trio of units without a trace of orange...well, okay...there is a trace of orange on the lead unit. But the BNSF Warbonnet / CSX Blue and Gray / ex-SOO Leaser lashup was a very welcome sight indeed.

Although a bit dirty - particularly on the plow - it was still great to catch this Warbonnet on the point of a westbound BNSF manifest. The train seemed to be a bit underpowered as it was working as hard as it could just to crawl along at 15 MPH.

When Amtrak was formed in 1972, the first official logo used was the "Pointless Arrow". It, along with the bright red "Bloody Nose", were the two main staples of the first scheme. To celebrate 40 years, here a reinterpretation of the scheme as applied to a P42DC. Personally, I think it looks pretty sharp!

In the last two weeks, the Zephyr has been the focus of several of Amtrak's heritage units. The Zephyr has seen Phase I, Phase III and Phase IV schemes all on the point. For the second consecutive trip west, the "Bloody Nose" Phase I schemed AMTK 156 leads the train west at Blue Mountain.

Spring is less than 24 hours away, which means this scene will hopefully "green up" a bit in the next month of two. In the meantime, a few Yucca plants make up just about all the green - save for the pine trees - in the scene as an eastbound BNSF manifest loops around past the Blue Mountain Road grade crossing.

This eastbound BNSF manifest got stuck holding the main for about 45 minutes at Plain. Maintenance was working on some ballast regulation around the curves here at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek. With maintenance finally in the clear, the train got the signal to head east. Here, the front of the train is approaching the grade crossing at Blue Mountain and the tail end of the train is just emerging from Tunnel 1.

When I heard the dispatcher talking to "BNSF 700" at Plain, I got excited because I thought I was going to be shooting a Warbonnet leading on the Moffat. Alas, it turned out that BNSF 700 has been repainted in the New Image scheme. However, there is still a tiny bit of Warbonnet in the shot...see it?

The Zephyr passes by the hotbox detector at MP 22.6 on its journey west. It has been awhile since I shot any of Amtrak's heritage units (particularly leading), so I was really pleased to learn that AMTK 822 was leading on this morning. It is actually the only one of the Genesis units sporting a heritage Amtrak scheme that I hadn't shot yet! Guess that means F40PH #406 (in Phase III) needs to be next on the list!

A single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of this Kentucky-bound coal load through the S-curve at Blue Mountain. Interestingly, I shot this exact unit headed west just two days earlier. Once it reached Grand Junction, it was pulled off that train and added to this one.

In June 2012, General Electric release the 5000th copy of an Evolution Series (e.g. ES44AC, ES44DC, ES40DC, etc) locomotive. That unit happened to be part of a Union Pacific order. So celebrate the Tier 3 compliant locomotive, some custom labels were added to the nose and the side of the radiator housing.

One train and lots of flags! Four (newer) UP units including a C44AC-CTE (UP 5739), an ES44AC (UP 7964) and two SD70ACes (UP 8351, UP 8709) work to moves this Kentucky-bound coal load east around the loop at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. In this shot, the three units is the foreground (mid-train swing helpers) are moving left to right and the sole unit on the rear is moving right to left.

An eastbound coal load (coming from the North Fork Branch and headed for Kentucky) heads through the curves at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek Canyon. In the foreground, the headend of the train passes the hotbox detector at MP 22.6. 1/3 mile away (as the crow flies), three mid-train swing helpers descend the grade from Tunnel 1. Among the mid-train swings is UP 7964, the 5000th Evolution Series locomotive.

Here is something you don't see on a typical day. A single C44/60AC (formerly a 6000 HP AC6000CW) slowly navigates the S-Curves at Blue Mountain and the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The unit is headed for Plain where it will shuffle some cars around during the day before returning to North Yard in the evening.

A sole C44/60AC creeps west at Blue Mountain at restricted speed. The main track is out of service between west Eisele (formerly Clay) and east Crescent. After getting permission from the EIC (Employee In Charge) of the OOS limits and getting flagged past the red signal at west Eisele, the unit heads for Plain. It is just after 7am as the sun breaches the horizon.
