UP's Denver, CO to Salina, KS manifest is all set to depart Denver. The only thing it is missing is a track warrant! A coal empty is coming in off the Limon Sub and the manifest here has to wait (in spectacular light that only lasted another 90 seconds).

Just in case you wake up one morning and you are not sure what city you are in, you can always check to see if you can see the Quest Building. If you can, you're in Denver! Power for the Denver to Green River (WY) train sits waiting for a crew...and a train!

A yard job works on switching cars out at 36th Street Yard. However, you won't find anybody in the cab of UP 712. This is a remote switch job and the RCL operator is on the ground at the opposite end of the string of cars, throwing switches.

Even though it is only 4 o'clock in the afternoon, the sun is getting very low in the western sky. An ES44AC and a pair of SD70Ms have been fueled and are ready to lead the MDVSI from Denver to Salina, KS.

I found an intruder at UP's 36th Street Yard on this particular Sunday! A relatively new BNSF SD70ACe was hanging around on load to UP. Not long after this picture, the unit headed north and then west toward Green River, WY.

Power for the Denver, CO to Green River, WY freight has just coupled onto the train. An SD70ACe delivered in May 2007, UP 8564, will be leading two cousin SD70Ms for the trip north up the Greeley Subdivision.

A five month old ES44AC sits in the yards awaiting its next assignment. Later in the day the unit would be assigned to the ADVFGR which moved some empty auto racks to Griffin, IN.

This GP40-2 was one of the few former Espee GP40-2's to actually where a number in the 5275-series for a brief time before being moved into the current number series. Here, the unit sits at 36th Street, awaiting its next local assignment.

This is something of a back-lit shot, but I decided to post it anyway. The reason being that this unit was in the consist of the MDVSI-04, getting ready to head east out of town. I have a strong suspicion that this unit might be headed for North Little Rock for a fresh coat of Armour Yellow paint!

A set of four all-EMD units (including a snoot-nose SD40-2) sit near the yard office in the 36th Street Yard. Having been raised on the Rio Grande, I'm definitely an EMD railfan and I always enjoy seeing a solid EMD consist. The two SD70M's are less than ten years old and the SD40-2's turn 30 this month!

Here's a Tunnel Motor that has seen better days! UP 9872 started life as DRGW 5407 many years ago. Now, the "Rio Grande" on the conductors side of the long hood is almost gone (and it is completely gone on the right side). The unit had been sitting in Burnham for the past four months and was seen here at the 36th Street Yard. The writing on the fuel tank says "Running from the answer brings us no closer to the truth".

One of the newest units on UP's roster, UP 7799 was the last ES44AC delivered to Union Pacific in 2007. It came out of the General Electric shops in Erie, PA in October 2007. The unit is on tap to run as the power on the MDVSI-02 later in the evening.

These two steam engines - buried in UP's 36th Street Yard - have had quite a trip from Oregon to Denver. They are ultimately headed for the San Louis & Rio Grande in Alamosa. The SLRG will use them on their tourist (passenger) trains. The steam engines original came to Denver via the Moffat, but got held at Winter Park because of clearance problems through the tunnel. So, they went back to Salt Lake and around through Wyoming. Here they sit, waiting to be moved over to North Yard and placed on the MNYPU.

The MDVSI-09, which has an SD40T-2 in the consist, pulls east past a GP38-2 and an SD70M. The manifest is built in the yard and then shoved back toward Union Station so the power can be put on. Then, once it has permission from the yardmaster, the train pulls out of the yard toward the Limon Sub to head east to Salina, KS.
