Power ready for assignment! After power has been serviced, it is moved by hostlers to the ready tracks, seen here. C44-9Ws and SD70MACs are not uncommon here. Of interesting is the KCS SD70ACe, which I shot earlier in the day on the HLAUDEN.

The Oakway SD60s are some of my favorite engines on the rails. I'm a fan of the spartan cab (and these were some of the last spartan cabs produced by EMD), and I really like the blue and white scheme too. Granted they look a bit better in 1987 when they were new to the rails, but I'll always take advantage of two of them coupled together. I doubt their leases will last much longer...

Colorado Railcar, located in Fort Lupton, CO, constructs Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) along with all sorts of passenger cars. Two DMUs constructed for the city of Portland, OR were released from the plant a day earlier. BNSF will move the cars on the tail end of freight trains from Denver to Portland.

A brand new DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) fresh out of Colorado Railcar in Fort Lupton is about to be moved by BNSF from Denver, CO to Portland, OR. The unit was pulled from the plant the morning before and will leave for Portland later that night.

Two BNSF SD40-2 pull a pair of DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit) out of Union Station. The train is coming out of the station using the passenger lead, the same track Amtrak uses in the evenings. The DMUs will be taken into the yard and added to a train for shipment to Portland, OR later in the day.

A sharp looking pair of SD60Ms sit waiting for their next assignment near the House in Denver. These were some of the last units delivered to Burlington Northern in the Cascade Green scheme. For nearly 18 years, they kept their numbers in the 9200's. Recently they were moved to the 8100's to make room for new units on BNSF's roster.

When the Ski Train returned to Denver and was being wyed in BNSF's yard, I was surprised to find a pair of UP AC6044CW's sitting near the house. It turns out that these units were most recently used on the Valmont coal train. UP runs the train from the mines to Denver; BNSF runs the train from Denver to the power plant in Boulder. UP keeps two units on the train for the duration.

Looks like this C44-9W has received a bit of body work! The unit was damaged in a derailment in early 2007. The body was fixed up easily enough, but it has yet to get a fresh paint job.

A trio of C44-9Ws sit near the House in BNSF's yard in Denver. It was really nice seeing such a clean Heritage I unit. A definite advantage to all the rain from the morning!

BNSF's New Image is slowly but surely being applied to more and more existing units (in addition to new units). Noted this GP38-2 working on the "Salt Mine" switch job at BNSF's 31st Street Yard.

On this day, Amtrak 5 was running 12 1/2 hours late due to poor weather in the mid-west. Here, after 8:00pm, the head end of the westbound Zephyr is approaching the diamond at 23rd Street. In the distance, on the left side of the picture, note the eastbound Zephyr (running a few minutes late), preparing to back into Union Station. (Apologies for the grainy look, but it was getting very dark and I was at a high ISO!)

A bit of light pokes through the clouds in the western sky at 7:35pm to light up the sides of a few of Denver's buildings as the eastbound Zephyr backs into Union Station on the passenger lead. It is 7:35pm...Amtrak would come to a stop at 7:43pm - precisely on time!

With the light fading fairly fast in the western sky, black and white seemed appropriate for this shot. The eastbound Zephyr must borrow a part of BNSF's yard in order to back into Union Station on the Passenger Lead. Note the conductor from the head end walking to throw a switch.

I thought this was an interesting trio of units sitting near BNSF's House. A Norfolk Southern "Catfish" (a name given to NS C44-9Ws by railfans) is sandwiched by two Warbonnets. Unfortunately, the second Warbonnet was blocked by additional power and I couldn't include any more of the unit.
