A pair of GEs, facing nose-to-nose, bring up the tail end of this eastbound loaded oil train. Upon reaching Denver, the train will get a new crew and will then continue north on the Greeley Sub to Cheyenne. In the past, oil trains have often gone east on the KP, but that will not be the case this time.

An eastbound oil train crosses the grade crossing at 80th Avenue, the only grade crossing between Leyden and North Yard that is not a quiet zone, meaning trains still use their horns here. In the middle of a workday on a Monday, only a single car is currently being stopped by the train.

The Espee Heritage Unit (UP 1996) has become the unit (out of the six on UP's roster) that I have actually caught the most in the last couple years. The unit is certainly unique, wearing a scheme reminiscent of Espee Daylight Scheme mixed with the Black Widow Scheme.

The westbound Zephyr is just a few minutes late as it approaches the east switch of Leyden. AMTK 184, the Phase IV heritage unit, is leading the Zephyr this morning. It is hard to believe it has been nine years since Amtrak unveiled its heritage schemes!

It is a beautiful May morning for the westbound Zephyr as it crosses 80th Avenue in Arvada on the approach to Leyden. If you noticed what looks to be pink or purple on a Superliner toward the back of the train, you are correct! That coach was used on the Winter Park Express and the wrap has not yet been removed from the car.

On a partly cloudy Sunday morning, the Winter Park Express approaches a clear signal at the east end of Leyden. Amtrak's "Bloody Nose" Heritage 1 unit is on the point, but will be trailing this evening after running around the train at Fraser.

A westbound coal empty, with a freshly repainted AC4400CW on the point, approaches the 80th Avenue grade crossing and a clear signal at east Leyden. While coal traffic has picked up a bit lately, non-coal traffic has dropped off a bit on the Moffat. This empty will meet an eastbound at Rollins and the eastbound Zephyr at Granby. Not much else out there!

Just another shot of the California Zephyr? Nope! This is, in fact, a new version of the Ski Train. It would only run twice in 2015 (March 14 and March 15), as part of a celebration for Winter Park's 75th Anniversary. However, Amtrak (which ran the train), Winter Park, and CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) all paid close attention. There is talk about Amtrak bringing the train back for the 2015-2016 Ski Season. Here, the train is approaching the east switch of Leyden

This westbound manifest is just about to cross 80th Avenue at the grade crossing just east of the east switch of Leyden. The train has a clear signal at Leyden and will continue up to Rocky. There, it will head in to the siding to meet an eastbound coal load.

The mercury in the thermometer is barely reaching 20°F on this chilly March morning. Arctic air and two feet of snow falling the last two weeks makes for a peaceful blanket of the white stuff along the tracks. The big question here is whose train is this? Turns out that it is UP's MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Roper, UT). A couple of BNSF units are being borrowed for the journey west.
