Upon reaching Denver, the train will get a new crew and will then continue north on the Greeley Sub to Cheyenne. AMTK 184, the Phase IV heritage unit, is leading the Zephyr this morning. It is hard to believe it has been nine years since Amtrak unveiled its heritage schemes! If you noticed what looks to be pink or purple on a Superliner toward the back of the train, you are correct! While coal traffic has picked up a bit lately, non-coal traffic has dropped off a bit on the Moffat. This empty will meet an eastbound at Rollins and the eastbound Zephyr at Granby. Nope! This is, in fact, a new version of the Ski Train. It would only run twice in 2015 (March 14 and March 15), as part of a celebration for Winter Park's 75th Anniversary. However, Amtrak (which ran the train), Winter Park, and CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) all paid close attention. There is talk about Amtrak bringing the train back for the 2015-2016 Ski Season. Arctic air and two feet of snow falling the last two weeks makes for a peaceful blanket of the white stuff along the tracks. The big question here is whose train is this? Turns out that it is UP's MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Roper, UT). A couple of BNSF units are being borrowed for the journey west.
