The sole C44-9W DPU'd on the back of this eastbound currently sits about thirty feet higher than the rest of the train in the foreground.

Coming right at you! BNSF 4045 leads an eastbound at Blue Mountain. The rest of the train wraps through the curves and the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

BNSF 4045 leads the eastbound Provo to Denver manifest through the S-curves at Blue Mountain. The train is comprised mainly of tank cars, and cars buried further back in the train can be seen in the distance.

High winds (for the third straight day) have created some snow drifts along the tracks. The tracks just west of the grade crossing at Blue Mountain are at the base of a hill. Snow blows right off the hill and onto the tracks. No problem though. UP 1989 relocates one of the drifts on the point of the Ski Train.

There's nothing better than snow covered mountains and a crystal clear blue sky. Amtrak 5 is climbing up from the base of Coal Creek Canyon on the approach to Tunnel 1. Although the train is westbound, it is technically headed east (by the compass) at this location.

Running about two hours late, Amtrak 5 rounds the curve just west of Clay on its continued journey west. Note that, directly above the Superliners you can see the trees and the hoppers on the curve at Big Ten Curve.

Most Rio Grande railfans have probably seen a picture from this location before, but probably not quite like this! At this location, you can get a nice shot of the front as well as the middle of a train (in the case of a coal train, anyway). Here is a shot from the same location in the day. Here, however, we see the train from front to back and then some! Light from the lead units wraps through the curves up toward tunnel one. The ghost of the train, as well as the FRED, follow up behind!

UP 5639 makes its way east at Blue Mountain. The UP wings in the direct sun light make for a nice shot at this tradition location dating back to the days of the Grande!

Afternoon clouds darken the scene at Blue Mountain a bit as UP 5951 slows to stop just short of the detector at MP 22.6. The crew on the train right now are running short on time and a relief crew awaits to take over for the rest of the trip into town. The sole swing helper, UP 5571, can be seen in the distance.

Unfortunately I do not have a lot of shots of tunnel moters (Rio Grande or otherwise) on my website as they had faded fast by the time digital technology came around. However, you can still catch one every once in a while! Such was the case on this day as UP 8810 (ex-SP 8271) is the third unit on the MNYRO-27.

Even though there is a work window between Tolland and Tabernash in effect until 5pm, the MNYRO is released from Denver, passing by Blue Mountain around 12:30pm. The crew is informed by DS-82 that they will hold the main at Tolland and wait for the main track to be put back in service and then continue west for a recrew on the west side of the divide.

The Ski Train comes through the S-Curve at Blue Mountain, accelerating slightly as it approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. The power is in a unique configuration with SKTX 283 leading, instead of SKTX 242. This is so the power can run around the train at Fraser and take the train "backward" back home to Denver. The wye at Tabernash is plugged with MOW equipment!

It is getting harder and harder to find unpatched Espee power anywhere in Colorado, let alone on the point anymore! SP 335 leads a westbound coal empty past the intermediate between Clay and Plain at the base of Coal Creek Canyon late in the day.

A coal empty wraps its way through the curves at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek. Cars wait patiently (we hope) at the grade crossing while the head end (nearly a track mile away) prepares to enter Tunnel One.
