The train will be meeting an eastbound manifest (the MRONY-04) at Clay. The manifest is holding the main, but does not fit between switches. Those with a keen eye might note something different about the Ski Train on this evening...the private cars are at the front of the train! This would be because the train was unable to wye (turn around) at Tabernash. So, the power ran around the train and essentially ran down the mountain "backward". Sounds like a coal load that was having some problems prevented the Ski Train from being able to be wyed at Tabernash. The power run around the train (note SKTX 283 in the lead instead of the typical SKTX 242). Passengers in the Kansas, Utah and California have a front seat view of the power! So, in Denver, a third P42DC (which is kept in Denver as a spare for just such situations) was added to the train. At Utah Junction, the train will stop and meet Amtrak 5. Amtrak will take the North Yard siding from Utah Junction west to C&S Junction. It took the train almost twelve hours to get from the Moffat Tunnel to Rocky! The primary reason was due to the MNYGJ, which broke a draw bar early in the morning. The other reason is that, well, baretables are just about the lowest priority train on the railroad! Note the last unit on an eastbound coal load coming through Clay is just barely visible in the upper left corner of the shot. A baretable intermodal (the IOADVR) came from Oakland, CA running through the Utah desert and over the Moffat. Here, the train waits for the West Local while sitting in the hole at Rocky. The lead unit - A C44-9W - sports the Heritage 2 scheme. This is still the most dominate BNSF scheme on the railroad. Next up is a second C44-9W, but this units wears the original Heritage scheme. The train is the MAKRPVO - the Akron to Provo manifest. First time I had ever heard of this particular train on the Moffat. Sometimes, BNSF will stage trains outside major yards and use the staging location as the originating terminal in the train symbol. I suspect that may have been the case here. Tie gangs, track gangs, switch gangs and signal gangs all out doing their thing. The Moffat has literally been taken out of service between Leyden and (at least) Cliff all week in between Amtrak's. This work train, with two SD70Ms for power, needed a place to tie up for the night, and the Rocky Spur worked as well as no house track was long enough to accomodate the train.
