Running about two hours late, Amtrak 5 passes by Chemical (just west of Leyden) with the Denver Skyline in the background. Now that Amtrak no longer moves freight or mail, the California Zephyr is reliably two engines, a baggage car, and eight Superliners.

A westbound BNSF Pueblo to Provo manifest moves west on a yellow (approach) signal on Main 3 at the Pecos Crossover. The power up front is two ES44DCs with a C44-9W stuck in between them. The second ES44DC is sporting CSX's "Dark Future" scheme.

The Beer Run, with extremely colorful power, accelerates west past the signal bridge at DS004. The two units on the point will be left in Golden as the Golden Switcher. The second two units will be used for the Beer Train power and will return later in the day with the eastbound train.

With the swing helpers successfully cut out of the train, the crew that brought the train off the mountain is now in the process of putting the two halves back together. 20 more feet and that goal will be accomplished!

After cutting out these swing helpers from the middle of an eastbound coal load on Bypass 2, UP engine hostlers take the units from the Bypass track back to the yard for servicing.

UP 5631 passes underneath I-76 on Bypass 2 just east of C&S Junction and just west of Pecos Crossover. At Pecos, the three swing helpers will be cut out of the train, the train will be put back together (with the three units on the point and one on the rear) and continue east on the KP.

There is a lot to take in here in this late night shot at Crescent. Along the right of way in the distance, the trees are lit by the headlight of the eastbound MPVNY. The ghost image of the train streaks past and the flashing lights of the crossing cast a red glow on the ground. And, of course, there is also the blinking FRED on the back of the train!

The eastbound Stockton to Denver manifest had six rather colorful units on it! BNSF warbonnet 767 led the train east at Cliff. Four units back was Norfolk Southern SD70M 2585. Afternoon thunderclouds are moving in from the west.

The MNYRO-30 developed an interesting problem at Cliff. Actually, developed may not be the correct word. When meeting an eastbound coal load, the conductor on the coal train noticed a hazmat violation on the MNYRO. A tank car of Methane was placed next to a gondola full of pipe, where the pipe exceeded the height of the gondola! After several hours of delay, the train switched cars around (using the Cliff siding) and solved the problem. Here, the head end of the train is west of Cliff, performing some switching moves.

Amazing the things you sometimes find when you least expect too! It has been about four years since UP replaced the old Rio Grande signals (and control boxes) at Crescent with all-new equipment. Today, while scouting up around Pactolus (between Cliff and Rollins), I noticed the signal control shed for Crescent sitting about fifty feet away from the tracks amongst some trees!

Three mid-train helpers pass the lake at Pactolus on a unit CNW coal load bound for the KP line and points east. My dad told me that he and his family came up to Pactolus when he was a kid to go ice skating in the winter, although he doesn't specifically remember any trains!

The eastbound MRONY (with unpatched Espee AC4400CW 173) departs east out of the siding at Cliff after meeting the MNYRO. Even at the end of July, a small amount of snow can still be found near the top of the Continental Divide!

With the work window currently keeping the Moffat closed up the hill, the Rocky Local does not need to worry about meeting any eastbounds as it enters the block on the main at Rocky. Just up ahead, the train will stop and back up the Rocky Spur to deliver its five hoppers.

Moving east rather slowly (for being on a clear signal), UP 4583 rolls past the bridge over South Boulder Creek located roughly halfway through the block.
