At the west end of Barbara's Gulch, an AC4400CW is "in your face" as it rounds the curve from under CO-93, toward a clear signal at the east switch of Rocky.

A short, 2-car work train makes its west west out of Rocky and up Big Ten Curve. When it gets up to Eisele (Clay), it'll back in to the siding from the west end, hook up to the cars in the siding (above in the frame), and back all the cars down to the siding at Rocky.

The weather in recent weeks has been slightly cooler than seasonable average, and a bit of rainfall as well has contributed to keeping the landscape in the area around Big Ten Loop fairly green. An ES44AC in very good paint brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal load.

Just west of the west switch of Rocky, we get a nice look at a UP passenger special highballing its way west. The train departed North Yard just after 9:30am and is set to run all the way to Helper today. In the background, you can see a handful of gondolas sitting on the siding at Eisele (Clay), dropped off by a single AC4400CW yesterday.

After the GP30, the GP60 is without a doubt my favor 4-axle unit ever produced. I really like the look of the boxy dynamic break intakes and, of course, the class spartan cab. It is good to see that UP has rebuilt (or is rebuilding) its GP60 fleet - designating them as GP60Es - so they will hopefully be in service for years to come. This GP60E is second out on UP's West Local on this day.

After leaving the mainline behind at Rocky, the West Local has backed up the spur and is in the process of crossing CO-93. As the local approached the highway, circuitry in the track detected the train (similar to a regular grade crossing) and turned the stoplight red for traffic. A stoplight facing the tracks turns from red to green. You can see the brakeman (yellow vest, left side) hanging on to the last covered hopper. He is protected the shove back and made sure no cars decided to run the red light as the train approached.

DS-82 has put the MNYGJ in the siding at Rocky to allow a late (by 2 1/2 hours) California Zephyr to run around on the mainline. Here, the manifest is stopped on the siding and Amtrak is proceeding west on clear signals. This is the first picture in a series of four. Here is the second picture in the series.

After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, the MRONY has a clear signal to head east in to Denver. From the looks of it, the lead unit has spent quite a bit of time traversing the Moffat...I wonder what "KNC" might be a reference to?

Ballast trains can always be something of a challenge to get west over the Moffat. They typically weigh somewhere around 7,000 tons and that is all uphill between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel. Here, a ballast train has a clear signal at the east switch of Rocky.

At the east switch of Rocky, the Roper to Denver manifest heads east toward Denver. The weather condition were deteriorating rapidly with the first few snow flakes just starting to fall. The Denver/Roper trains lately are led by the kind of AC power you see on most coal trains. It was nice to see some SD70M's on the train and an SD9043MAC on the point to boot!

At the east switch of Rocky, the eastbound MRONY continues toward town on a clear signal. Although there are only two units on the point, there was indeed a third (DPU) unit - an SD9043MAC - on the end of the train.
