Off into the sun(rise) ... Quite possibly for the final time, DRGW 5371 heads east across the Moffat. It is now just 10 miles away from North Yard. Where it will head from there is anyone's guess (at least as of the time of this photo!). Whatever happens, hopefully it will be preserved if not restored...

The last of the unpatched Rio Grande units on UP's roster. Nearly 20 years after the Rio Grande/Espee merger, this last SD40T-2 is more than likely making its last-ever trip across the Moffat. It is tentatively scheduled for retirement in Cheyenne...time will tell. There is also a rumor that it might be added to UP's heritage fleet (along with the DDA40X, E9's and Steam units), possibly even to be refurbished!? For the time being, it has clearly seen better days. Note that both number boards have been removed from the unit...never a good sign!

Just east of Barbara's Gulch, the MRONY-04 is heading east on clear signals. There is an interesting consist on this train. It is led by an AC4400CW (UP 6844), an SD70ACe (UP 8336), an SD60M (UP 2292), an SD40-2 (UP 3574) and none other than the last Grande SD40T-2, DRGW 5371.

The Rocky Local is making a Saturday appearance on the Moffat line on this day. The two tank cars at the front of the train will be dropped off at Chem Spur (just ahead). The remaining covered hoppers will be taken up the Rocky Spur.

Now in the home stretch, the Ski Train will be able to accelerate a bit for the duration of the trip into Denver. The train is about a mile away from a transition from a rural setting to an urban setting.

Amtrak is kicking up quite a bit of snow (which is then getting caught in the 20 MPH wind) as it approaches a clear signal at Chemical, 14.5 miles west of Union Station in Denver.

Unfortunately, the classic Rio Grande block signals at Chemical have been replaced by a single mast signal (with a head facing each direction). Regardless, this classic view at MP 14.5 still looks good with the Kansas on the back of the westbound Ski Train.

How many trains are in this picture!? The obvious trains is of course the BNSF unit tank train making its way through an S-Curve in Barbara's Gulch on the approach to Rocky. However, did you notice Amtrak 5 heading west through Clay several miles to the west near the top of the picture?

With the obvious exception of coal trains, the Moffat doesn't see many unit trains anymore…and the ones they do see tend to be operated by BNSF! Here, a unit tank train (with various forms of fuel) heads west at Chemical.

Although there is no snow on the ground in the Denver-Metro area, there are piles of it up at Winter Park. The skiers aboard the first Ski Train of the 2006 winter season should have a great day on the slopes. The train is just 15 miles west of Union Station and the morning sun reflects nicely off the sides of the cars.
