Earlier in the day, this coal train was taken out of North Yard up to Leyden and tied down. Not too common to find a westbound tied down at Leyden, but track work up the hill prevented the train from going any further west. Now, right around sunset, a new crew has just been dropped off to take the train west. The train is the Colorado Springs Department of Utilities train, which used to have the cars lettered "CSDU".

It's not too often that you'll catch a BNSF unit with AC tractor motors on the Moffat. However, on this first day of October, this particular train had BNSF 5720 in the lineup. This was one a pre-production GEVO from GE - in fact, this was the eighth-ever ES44AC produced! BNSF still has it labeled as an AC4400CW. The train is moving slow on the main at Leyden.

Nice evening light strikes this BNSF manifest as it slowly pulls its way on the main at Leyden. The train will meet an eastbound coal load here before continuing west toward Utah.

At the east switch of Leyden, this westbound manifest has been flagged past a red signal on the main. Light UP power is waiting at the west end of the main for an eastbound coal load. The manifest will sit behind the light power. Note the classic signal still standing.

Typically, I wouldn't include a shot with windshield glare like this. However, the resulting "star" that the glare created seemed fitting considering the day, September 11. Six years after that horrible day, this westbound coal empty has clear signals at the west end of Leyden.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
Just east of Leyden, the Ski Train continues toward town with typical summer clouds looming to the south. You may notice in this shot that the Ski Train appears to be missing something...such as the Utah and Kansas which can typically be found on the train. The private cars were instead assigned to the Cheyenne Frontier Days train for the day, traveling north instead of west!

Just west of Leyden, UP 951 has a clear signal at the west end of Leyden to continue toward Denver. The train will enter Bypass 2 and wait for a relief crew. From there, the train will head north toward Cheyenne, and east toward Nebraska.

Got snow? You can barely see the train through the thick spring snow flakes falling at Leyden on this Thursday afternoon in March. March snow flakes in Colorado tend to be larger (and wetter) than in the winter. The Ski Train is getting close to completing its final Thursday Ski Train run of 2006-2007 season.

Just because it is March, don't think that means winter is over! Indeed, March tends to be the snowiest month in Colorado. This Friday was no exception as the Ski Train hustles west on the main through Leyden.

The clouds were playing havoc with the lighting, casting a nice shadow in the foreground while the mountains stall stall in the sunlight in the distance. Regardless of the lighting, the Ski Train charges west out of Leyden with 13 miles of the 56 mile journey to Winter Park taken care of.

Highball Leyden! The Ski Train is not wasting any time moving west at the west end of Leyden. The train is easily making track speed (about 50 MPH) as it crosses over the west switch.

It seems to be rare enough to catch UP 1989 out in daylight, but it was a special treat to find it leading the Ski Train! Here, the train is passing through Leyden near Alkire Estates. Ralston Valley High School, Arvada's newest High School, is visible on the right side of image just over half way up.

One of the three F40PH's used on the Ski Train - SKTX 289 - had some bearing problems and was sent to Burnham for repairs. The stars aligned just right and the Rio Grande Heritage Unit was available. Here, UP 1989 leads the train west through Leyden.
