Although there have been a lot of rerouted coal trains on the Front Range Sub this summer, this empty with a colorful consist is not one of them! This is in fact the Valmont coal train, returning to Denver from Boulder. If nothing changes with Xcel Energy's plans, this train will cease by the end of 2017 as Valmont plans to shut down its coal-fired generator.

BNSF has repaired the flooding damage done to the St Joseph Subdivision in the Omaha area. However, the Napier and Omaha Subdivisions are still out of service, so coal empties will likely continue on the Front Range Sub throughout September. Here, one such reroute is stopped near Church Ranch Lake waiting for a southbound at Broomfield.

At the south edge of Louisville, 96th Street crosses over the Front Range Sub. This is a relatively new overpass, constructed to eliminate the need for cars to cross the tracks at a grade crossing. Here, the Longmont Turn is on the move with a GP39V on the point. The GP39V was rebuilt by VMV Paducahbilt from a GP35.

Due to floods in the midwest, the Front Range Sub has seen a fair amount of rerouted traffic this summer. Such was the case on this Thursday afternoon as an empty BNSF northbound enters the siding at Broomfield. The train is meeting a southbound...but the train won't fit west of Nickel Street, so the crossing will have to be cut.

BNSF's Longmont Switch has just crossed over US-287 in Broomfield and is backing down the Lafayette branch. This local used to run at night, but has been running in the daylight for nearly a year. While I had caught it a few times in the Summer, this is the first time I've seen it on the branch in Winter!

When I first went to Helper, UT in 1999, I saw nine Rio Grande SD40T-2's cut into the middle of a coal train as swing helpers for the climb up to Soldier Summit. The sound was amazing. It's great to see that 11 years later, the Dash-2 series is still in extremely wide use, even if it technically on a local (the Longmont Turn).

As much as I love Cascade Green, I almost wish the lead unit here had been in the Heritage scheme just so it matched the other three SD40-2's in the set. However, I'm not complaining as the sight and sound of four EMD 645 engines running was beautiful! If you'd like to hear, I recorded a brief clip and posted it along with this shot. The power on BNSF's Longmont Turn on this day is truly fantastic! A quartet of SD40-2's climb up the grade into Broomfield, pulling at 58 cars at milepost 17. As great as it was to watch, it was even more fantastic to listen too!

While a nice pair of E-units might look a bit better, this matching pair of ES44DC's look pretty good on the point of this Officer's Special coming around the Westminster Fill. After a crew change in Denver, the special will continue south to La Junta.

BNSF's Buck Local heads south on the BNSF "New North Main" alongside the UP Main. The local has just come down off the Front Range Sub and is headed for the yard. It is going to have to stop for a bit though due to traffic ahead blocking its way. I love that in 2010, you can still find a blue and yellow GP60 and a Heritage GP38-2 working together on a train.

BNSF's Buck Local has just received a warrant to proceed from MP 18 down to MP 11. There, it will have to wait for a few minutes for MOW to clear up!

The DENTAC (Denver, CO to Tacoma, WA) is moving north at track speed on the main track as the Buck Local patiently waits in the siding. After reassembling their train on the main track, the local pulled into the clear to wait for the train to pass. After it cleared MP 16, the local got a warrant and backed out onto the main and proceeded into town.

The Buck Local brought cars along from Longmont when it arrived at Broomfield. Several cars did not need to go down the Lafayette branch, so the local got permission from the dispatcher to leave the cars sitting out on the main track. Fortunately, the dispatcher didn't have anything coming out of town immediately, so this did not cause any bottlenecks. Here, the train has dropped off its caboose on the Lafayette branch and is picking up its train on the main.

The Buck Local is on the Lafayette branch and the Front Range Sub mainline is in the foreground. The two converge at Burns Junction about a half mile to the east.
