This bridge at the base of Coal Creek Canyon sported Rio Grande lettering (in fly letter, of course) until a derailment here on December 10, 2009 resulted in the lettering being pained over. Regardless, the Phase III Heritage Unit looks mighty fine crossing over the bridge. In my humble opinion, I would like to see Amtrak adopt this scheme for its entire fleet.

Last week when the Zephyr headed west on a Friday with AMTK 184 on the point, I was bummed I didn't have time to shoot the train anywhere other than at Chemical. So, when I heard AMTK 184 was leading the train again on this day, I was excited that I had the time to make the climb up to Tunnel 1. This is the shot I had in mind and definitely the best place to shoot a westbound on the Moffat in the morning!

AMTK 184 looks pretty sharp in its Phase IV Heritage scheme as the westbound Zephyr, running about 50 minute late, ascends through the S-Curves just below Tunnel 1.

After disappearing a bit in the last few years, the SD9043MACs seem to be making a bit of a come back in Colorado. After 2008 or 2009, it became nearly impossible to find one on a coal train. Now granted, this isn't a coal train, but it is still nice to see the beasts out running again. I honestly wonder how much life these units have left in them as the units pass their 16th birthday.

Hmmm...two units and nothing else? Turns out this light power has been assigned to work train duty. The crew is taking the power up to Rollins where it will tie on to the waiting train in the house track. This was a pleasant surprise because it's not too often that you can find a C41-8W on the Moffat!

The clouds are not cooperating for this shot of an eastbound coal train descending the grade from Tunnel 1 toward the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

The rocks above Tunnel One are always an inviting place to hang out and watch westbounds! Such is the case here as this coal empty...with a LOT of power...climbs toward the east portal of Tunnel One. Only the first three units are actually online, however. The other five units are offline and will be set out in the yard at Glenwood Springs to serve as swing power for eastbound loads coming out of Grand Junction.

One other thing that I like about this picture. Through pure coincidence, the ID of this picture is 103911, marking the 3,911th picture added to my site. I find it happy that this picture should be added on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th.

After disappearing behind the rocks on the curve to the right, the lead power on this Somerset-bound coal empty reappears about two thirds of the way up from Coal Creek.

The climb from the base of Coal Creek Canyon up to Tunnel One is a great one that I've always enjoyed observing. This picture and the next two are a sequence showing a coal empty making the ascent to the tunnel and the Plainview where they will take the siding for a meet.

It is getting to be late in the day as this westbound BNSF manifest works its way through the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The head end units are about to pass into Tunnel 1 in the distance.

This is a picture that I've been wanting to try to get for awhile and the opportunity finally presented itself! A westbound coal empty wraps through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek on its journey west. The east end of Leyden is directly above the flag on the lead unit. You can see the tower that is near the west end of Leyden on the left side of the picture. And, in the distance, note the Cherokee Power Plant, which receives coal from Union Pacific.

After a couple hours of work, crews have managed to set a derailed hopper upright, sitting in the middle of CO-72. A flatbed truck would be brought in and the hopper loaded on the truck to be taken away from the derailment site.

Union Pacific and Colorado state crews walk around the bridge over CO-72, examining the damage after the MNYRO derailed on its way west. As of this posting, the cause is still under investigation. There was very minimal damage to the tracks and no damage (other than superficial) to the bridge. It looks as though it was a stringlined derailment, meaning the cars were pulled off the tracks.

A few hundred feet from the tracks at the base of Coal Creek Canyon is a CDOT facility. Plows will fill with sand here to keep CO-72 clear in the winter months. CDOT crews said they hear loud crashing sounds and looked out the window to see freight cars rolling down the embankment as the MNYRO derailed.

A look at the eight cars that derailed at the base of Coal Creek Canyon on December 10th. All the cars that derailed were empty, including the sole tank car seen here. The derailment happened around 11:30am. It took crews seven hours to reopen CO-72 and the tracks were open again by 9:00pm.
