Last week when the Zephyr headed west on a Friday with AMTK 184 on the point, I was bummed I didn't have time to shoot the train anywhere other than at Chemical. So, when I heard AMTK 184 was leading the train again on this day, I was excited that I had the time to make the climb up to Tunnel 1. This is the shot I had in mind and definitely the best place to shoot a westbound on the Moffat in the morning!

After disappearing a bit in the last few years, the SD9043MACs seem to be making a bit of a come back in Colorado. After 2008 or 2009, it became nearly impossible to find one on a coal train. Now granted, this isn't a coal train, but it is still nice to see the beasts out running again. I honestly wonder how much life these units have left in them as the units pass their 16th birthday.

The rocks above Tunnel One are always an inviting place to hang out and watch westbounds! Such is the case here as this coal empty...with a LOT of power...climbs toward the east portal of Tunnel One. Only the first three units are actually online, however. The other five units are offline and will be set out in the yard at Glenwood Springs to serve as swing power for eastbound loads coming out of Grand Junction.
One other thing that I like about this picture. Through pure coincidence, the ID of this picture is 103911, marking the 3,911th picture added to my site. I find it happy that this picture should be added on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th.

This is a picture that I've been wanting to try to get for awhile and the opportunity finally presented itself! A westbound coal empty wraps through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek on its journey west. The east end of Leyden is directly above the flag on the lead unit. You can see the tower that is near the west end of Leyden on the left side of the picture. And, in the distance, note the Cherokee Power Plant, which receives coal from Union Pacific.

Union Pacific and Colorado state crews walk around the bridge over CO-72, examining the damage after the MNYRO derailed on its way west. As of this posting, the cause is still under investigation. There was very minimal damage to the tracks and no damage (other than superficial) to the bridge. It looks as though it was a stringlined derailment, meaning the cars were pulled off the tracks.
