Regardless, the Phase III Heritage Unit looks mighty fine crossing over the bridge. In my humble opinion, I would like to see Amtrak adopt this scheme for its entire fleet. So, when I heard AMTK 184 was leading the train again on this day, I was excited that I had the time to make the climb up to Tunnel 1. After 2008 or 2009, it became nearly impossible to find one on a coal train. Now granted, this isn't a coal train, but it is still nice to see the beasts out running again. Turns out this light power has been assigned to work train duty. The crew is taking the power up to Rollins where it will tie on to the waiting train in the house track. Such is the case here as this coal empty...with a LOT of power...climbs toward the east portal of Tunnel One. Only the first three units are actually online, however. The other five units are offline and will be set out in the yard at Glenwood Springs to serve as swing power for eastbound loads coming out of Grand Junction. One other thing that I like about this picture. Through pure coincidence, the ID of this picture is 103911, marking the 3,911th picture added to my site. A westbound coal empty wraps through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek on its journey west. The east end of Leyden is directly above the flag on the lead unit. You can see the tower that is near the west end of Leyden on the left side of the picture. And, in the distance, note the Cherokee Power Plant, which receives coal from Union Pacific. As of this posting, the cause is still under investigation. There was very minimal damage to the tracks and no damage (other than superficial) to the bridge. Plows will fill with sand here to keep CO-72 clear in the winter months. CDOT crews said they hear loud crashing sounds and looked out the window to see freight cars rolling down the embankment as the MNYRO derailed. All the cars that derailed were empty, including the sole tank car seen here. The derailment happened around 11:30am.
