This coal empty is charging west through Tolland in perfect afternoon light. It met an eastbound BNSF manifest which received a relief crew four hours earlier. Unfortunately, a parade of westbounds has kept the crew waiting patiently for their turn to head east.

Sunlight rains down on this westbound coal empty which is making its way through the canyon between Rollins and Tolland. Hard to believe snow covered the area less than 24 hours ago.

The crew on the train to the right (on the siding) has died and is waiting for a relief crew out of Denver. The train to the left (on the main) has a fresh crew and is passing the train in the siding. The train will end up meeting again at some point though, as both are headed for the West Elk mine on the North Fork Branch in western Colorado.

Not the best light for this shot, but with the blue sky and the lingering snow, I decided to include it. Also of interest is the trio of mid-train swing helpers. Rumor has it that the cars ahead of these units are headed for Roper. The cars behind are headed for Grand Junction. After arriving in Grand Junction, the train can be cut ahead of the first swing helper and the front half can continue west to Utah.

This train seemed very familiar when I took this picture! The reason being that I shot the exact same train less than 24 hours earlier between Leyden and Rocky. Two derailments resulted it in taking 36 hours and four crews to get the train from North Yard to this spot at Tolland.

A crew members from the MNYRO stands by on the front porch of UP 6302 as a "Snow Bus" passes by on the siding. The Snow Bus is used to transport crews back and forth to trains that cannot be reached by road (due to adverse weather).

An eastbound coal load sits in the siding at Rollins. It received a new crew from Denver after a derailment earlier in the day was cleaned up. Turns out that crew would sit in the winter wonderland for the day as a second derailment would keep this train from moving an inch.

Well, it is official! Pecos street is closed at the tracks (near Utah Junction) and a two-year-long Form B has been put in place on the tracks. A new overpass will be built here over the next 12-18 months, so traffic on Pecos will no longer need to worry about coal trains.

Get ready, because shots like these won't be possible for much longer! After five years, funding has finally been identified and a company named to carry out the Pecos Street grade separation. A new bridge will be built (18-22 months) over the UP Moffat Tunnel Sub and the BNSF Front Range Sub. The street was officially closed to through traffic starting on December 16, 2009.

A loaded coal train makes its way down Bypass 1. This train is a little unusual in that there are four units on the point. Most coal loads on the Moffat these days have two or perhaps three units on the point.

One last shot of UP 1989 leading the westbound Snow Bus, sitting on the siding at East Portal. The train is scheduled to head west to Phippsburg, CO. This will mark the first time the Rio Grande Heritage unit has ever traveled on the Craig Branch. This will mean that the Rio Grande Heritage unit will have finally traveled on all of its namesake major routes, save Tennessee Pass (which no unit has run on in well over 10 years).

About a quarter of a mile away from the Moffat Tunnel, this Snow Bus has come to a stop on the siding at East Portal. DS-82 has informed the train that they will be meeting at least one (and possibly two) trains here before they will get their change to run through the tunnel. The temperature outside for this shot was a rather brisk 2°F (-17°C)...

After getting the switch at west Rollins clear of snow and ice, UP 1989 and crew met an eastbound coal load, seen here taking the siding at Rollins. UP 1989 was originally going to meet the train at Tolland, but a frozen switch at west Rollins changes the location of the meet.

Ahh, the not-so-glamorous side of railroading! With the switch heater out of order at the west switch of Rollins, the conductor had to use a pick to clear the switch points of snow and ice. After throwing the switch a few times by hand, DS-82 was again able to throw the switch remotely from her desk 500 miles away in Omaha, NE.

I was very lucky to be able to get this shot. The Snow Bus was running well ahead of me (hindered by slow speeds on icy roads). However, the switch heater at west Rollins was not working and the switch was out of correspondence. UP 1989 had to stop so the conductor could walk up to the switch and swing/pick the snow out of the switch points, allowing me to grab a couple of nice shots, like this one.
