These SD70's were "Tier-2 Emission's Compliant", and had AC traction motors. Now, in late 2004, the DC traction motor version (SD70M-2) has been built. The prototypes are GM 74 and GM 75. This (along with DRGW 3003) was the longest-lasting GP30 on the roster, remaining on UP's active roster until retirement on July 30, 1999. DRGW 3002 was also one of only four Rio Grande GP30's to receive the large letter paint scheme (along with 3001, 3014, and 3027).
