After passenger trains, the second most difficult train to get ahead of is definitely a Z-Train! I was able to set up for this shot just south of Platteville, with four GEs on the point. But this would be the last shot I was able to get prior to the train arriving in Denver.

A BNSF C44-9W has a long string of empty well cars south on the Greeley Sub. A storm front is starting to creep its way over the top of the Colorado Rockies. It is expected to dump around 4" of snow overnight leading in to tomorrow.

UP 2047 is one of numerous rebuilt SD40-2s on UP's roster in 2023. The unit now carries the designation SD40N, indicating that it has in fact gone through the rebuild program. Great to see one is arguable the most reliable diesel-electric unit ever built still in active service.

Just north of the town of Platteville along US-85, UP 9006 leads three other units on an 8,000-foot manifest. UP 9006 is a "Tier-4 Credit Unit". UP, like many Class 1 railroads, used carbon credits to purchase some Tier-3 compliant units after the deadline.

You couldn't ask for better lighting for these three units than the Golden Hour light here. The units are on the point of a southbound manifest, approach a clear (green) signal at the north end of Platteville.

As we enter in to the Golden Hour, UP 9013 rounds the curve just north of Platteville, taking the tracks from a southwest direction to a south direction on the journey south toward Denver. The conspicuous road sign along US-85 indicate the road will be curving, following the tracks to the north.

My favorite curve for morning shots on the Greeley Sub is just north of Platteville. UP 844 and UP 1943 lead the train through the curve this year, with the typical impressive passenger consist.

For the first time since 2013, UP 844 (the 4-8-4 Northern steam engine) led the Cheyenne Frontier Days train. The engine spent the last few years undergoing a number of repairs. Whether or not some of those repairs were necessary is a matter of debate, and not one I'm going to get in to here as my knowledge of steam engines is virtually non-existent. Regardless, the steam team got the engine up and running for Frontier Days 2016, and it was a great sight (and sound).

Seems like just yesterday the SD70ACe first came out. Hard to believe it has in fact been ten years now! This unit is actually considered an SD70AH by Union Pacific. It is virtually identical to an SD70ACe, except that it is heavier. Roughly 7,000 pounds heavier (427,000lbs vs 420,000lbs). While that may not seem like much, the extra weight does actually make a difference in tractive effort, allowing the unit to better grip the rails.

A southbound manifest heads slowly south out of Platteville. There is some switching going on down around Brighton and the Vestas wind plant, so this manifest is in no huge hurry to get down to Brighton.

There are rumors that UP no longer has the (custom) spare parts necessary to maintain 6936. If true, it means it is possible the massive DDA40X will no longer be able to run once one of those custom parts breaks. Whether these rumors are true or not, I'm an uncertain. But with even the possibility, it is good to get as many pictures now as possible!

It is a perfect morning for the annual running of the Cheyenne Frontier Days passenger special. We are just north of Platteville here as the train glides by. With no operable steam this year, UP used the E-units and the DD40AX for power.

Just north of the north switch of Platteville, this rerouted double stack train is holding at a double red. The dispatcher isn't quite sure where the he is going to make a meet, so the train must wait!

The steam train always attracts quite a croud on the ground. Here at Platteville, the steam train held the main for a southbound UP manifest. After getting a clear signal, the train "smokes" up and prepares to depart northbound.
