Two private cars bring up the rear of the Zephyr. 35 years ago, you could see cars like these two breezing by on the Moffat six days a week. They are veterans of the original California Zephyr, which ran until the formation of Amtrak in 1971.

The eastbound Zephyr is clipping along at 70 MPH, which is track speed between Kremmling and Flat. The east switch of Troublesome was the location of a costly (and, sadly, deadly) derailment on Tuesday, May 15, 1956. The crew on an eastbound manifest missed an approach signal at west Troublesome. The train was meeting a westbound manifest, and the westbound was not yet clear of the east switch. The eastbound train realized the mistake too late, and ran the red signal and side-swiped the westbound train. This led to the creation of a short movie called "The Trouble at Troublesome". It was produced by Rio Grande to show to employees in training.

An unusual coal load leaves the east end of Troublesome on a clear signal. Why is it unusual? It is only about 4,000 feet long and has no mid-train DPUs! Instead, it is configured with two units on the point and two unit on the rear.

After a great chase from Fraser, it is here, just east of Troublesome, that we will part ways with the westbound Zephyr. It is meeting a coal load at Kremmling and I'll be chasing that back toward Granby.

Running about 10 minutes late, the California Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east end of Troublesome as it hustles east. Amtrak along this stretch of the former Rio Grande is allowed to max out at 70 MPH!

At the east switch of Troublesome, a track maintainer sits on the siding and gives a "roll by" to this MRONY. The maintainer will look sticking brakes, anything hanging off the train, or just anything that could pose a problem or safety risk. On this day, the roll by looks good and the train continues east.

Between Denver and Glenwood Springs, there is a section of track between Flat and Kremmling when the Zephyr actual reaches speeds of 70 MPH. Here, at Troublesome, the House Track is rejoining with the siding as we bolt by.

At the east switch of Troublesome, a Herzog work train has just picked up some track and time to head east to Flat. The train has been working to tidy up the railroad by picking up discarded ties along the right of way. Once reaching Flat, the train will tie down in the house track for the day.

An eastbound coal load quickly makes it was east out of the east end of Troublesome. At this point, the train was probably moving along at 45-50 MPH. A lot faster than the Front Range!

Between Byers Canyon and Gore Canyon, trains can really make some good time. Coal train will go as fast as 50 or 55 MPH, and Amtrak will quickly hit 79 MPH. Here, a westbound coal empty approaches Troublesome on a clear signal.
