The westbound Zephyr maneuvers through the S-Curves between Tunnel 1 and the east end of Plain. The train has clear signals ahead and will not be meeting another train in this current winter wonderful for quite some time to come.

Last week when the Zephyr headed west on a Friday with AMTK 184 on the point, I was bummed I didn't have time to shoot the train anywhere other than at Chemical. So, when I heard AMTK 184 was leading the train again on this day, I was excited that I had the time to make the climb up to Tunnel 1. This is the shot I had in mind and definitely the best place to shoot a westbound on the Moffat in the morning!

AMTK 184 looks pretty sharp in its Phase IV Heritage scheme as the westbound Zephyr, running about 50 minute late, ascends through the S-Curves just below Tunnel 1.

An officers special emerges from Tunnel 1 on its way toward Denver. The special left Council Bluffs, IA on April 4th and began a tour of about 80% of the Union Pacific railroad! Ten days later, the train cut across Colorado.

UP's E-Units have been in Colorado for a few weeks working on various Operation Lifesaver trains. After spending a few days in the Steamboat area and a few more days in the Grand Junction area, the train is headed east on the Moffat (and then North on the Greeley Sub), ultimately headed for Nebraska. Here, the train is about to enter Tunnel 1.

The C44AC-CTE that was added to the consist of this OLS train is mostly obscured in this view of the train just west of Tunnel 1. The train is headed for Gering, NE (just south of Scottsbluff, NE) for its next Operation Lifesaver Duties.

The clouds hang low in the sky as UP's Operation Lifesaver Special (led by E9's 951, 963B, and 949) head west toward Tunnel 1. This is only the second time the E-units have made an appearance on the former Rio Grande, and they are headed for Steamboat Springs for a few days for Operation Lifesaver.

It is wonderful that 19 years after the fall of Rio Grande, you can still find fly letters roaming through the Tunnel District! The last car of the Ski Train, the Kansas, is about to head into Tunnel 19.

Problem with one of the three F40's (SKTX 289) typically used on the Ski Train resulted in a rare treat! UP loaned the Rio Grande Heritage Unit to the Ski Train for the weekend to assist with the pull. Here, under crystal clear blue skies, the train is about to duck into Tunnel 1.

The tail end of Amtrak is just about to round the curve and disappear into Tunnel 1. Nearly a foot of snow fell the day before in the second of two blizzards which hit the Front Range in a 9-day period!

The California Zephyr (particularly Amtrak 6) was frequently running VERY late in late July and early August of 2006. On the night of August 4, Amtrak was schedule to arrive in Denver at 7pm. Well, I went out west to Plain to get some night shots when I heard that it wasn't due into the station until 2am! The train ended up getting its crew changed at the crossing at Plain right around 2am. Shortly after the crew change, Amtrak passed my camera as it entered Tunnel one. Is the same exposure, you can see Amtrak round the curve into Clay on the left side of the shot.
