On a chilly, overcast morning, an eastbound manifest (Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) departs Leyden on a clear signal. This train departs from Roper on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, typically arriving Denver a day later.

This eastbound MRONY crossing 80th Avenue as it continues east past a green flag. A trio of SD70s lead the train, albeit each one being a slightly different model. An SD70ACe is on the point, followed by a Phase 1 SD70M, and finally a Phase 2 SD70M. The Phase 2 SD70Ms (with their flared radiators) are among my favorite modern engines.

This eastbound BNSF manifest departed Provo the day before and has traversed the former Rio Grande along with a UP manifest that is arriving at North Yard right around the time this shot was taken. Hard to tell if the BNSF train was behind the UP train for the entire trip. One or both may have stopped to switch in Grand Junction. The MRONY also had to wait for a recrew at Bond.

An eastbound BNSF manifest is approaching the west switch at Leyden. There, it will actually enter the siding. The signal for the siding (well, for westbounds) is visible on the right side of this shot. Note the sign indicating the control point for West Leyden: CP DS013.

BNSF's Provo to Denver manifest has a trio of elephant-style GEs leading it into the siding at Leyden. DS-86 aligned the train into the siding with the intention holding it for Amtrak. However, the train made better-than-expected time down the east slope of the Moffat. As a result, DS-86 already has a clear signal setup for the train out the east end. The train will meet the Zephyr at C&S Junction. Note the sole DPU on the end of the (relatively short) train on the right side of the shot.

It's pretty crazy just how much the city of Arvada (suburb of Denver) has grown in the past twenty years. In 1997, Leyden was practically out in the middle of nowhere. Just a few houses, many with pastures for horses, around. Now, there are five major neighborhoods surrounding Leyden as well as one of Arvada's four high schools (Ralston Valley). An eastbound BNSF manifest takes the siding, skirting the south edge of one of the neighborhoods: The Village at Five Parks.

This westbound coal empty has been sitting here on the main, just east of the grade crossing, for about 45 minutes. The Zephyr was ahead of it and met an eastbound at Rollins. Cliff was plugged with maintenance of way, so there was nowhere else for the empty to go. Now, the eastbound is out of Crescent and DS-80 and told the crew they can pull into the clear.

There has been a slight uptick in coal trains on the Moffat lately. In fact, this Energy-bound coal empty will be meeting a coal train that loaded at West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch. This particularly empty is quite long, which is why the dispatcher has him on the main. Even still, it will not be able to clear the east switch at Plain until the load is in the siding at in the clear so the empty can start pulling west.

A westbound empty pulls on the main at Plain toward Rainbow Cut. This is something an iconic and timeless view for me. I remember coming to this spot at Plain many, many times with my dad as a kid and watching Rio Grande trains, both coming and going, from this vantage point. Note the pile of old ties that were replaced as part of the maintenance blitz back in October.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) CSX, Union Pacific
For the third time in three months, a coal train runs on the Moffat with CSX power. Seems that there is a contract for a customer east of the Mississippi that uses CSX and UP. But rather than power swapping, the train just runs the distance with CSX power! The train has been appearing every four weeks (or so) since September. It's a little hard to tell, but the ditch lights on CSX 3202 are flashing...an option that CSX has chosen for its ditch lights, but UP and BNSF have not.

A pair of CSX GE's (in the newest version of the "Dark Future" paint scheme) lead this eastbound coal train down the siding at Plain. The train will slow to a stop at the east switch as the empty on the main is too long (by a car and a half) to clear the east switch. This was good news for me, as it gave me time to set up for additional shots at Blue Mountain!

A pair of CSX units lead an eastbound coal train past the detector at MP 22.6. The last of three mid-train DPUs is visible in the distance, descending the grade toward the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

A third CSX unit could be found on this eastbound coal load on the Moffat. The first two units were CSX, and the trailing DPU is also CSX. The train came west with just the three CSX units for power. Now, they were split and setup for front and end power. A trio of UP units were picked up in Glenwood Springs and cut in mid-train. Those units will be setout in Denver, and the train will continue east with only the CSX units, setup 2x1.

a long lens shot (400mm) that shows an eastbound coal load on the main at Rocky. As the lead units pass by the switch to the Rocky Branch, the mid-train DPUs enter Little Ten Curve. Those mid-train DPUs will be setout in Denver before the train continues east on the KP.

As this CSX-led coal train reached the east end of Rocky, the sun just barely started to peek out from behind the early morning clouds. The blue and yellow of CSX's Dark Future paint scheme doesn't look half bad on the Moffat, eh?
