Earlier in the week, I got a shot of BNSF 777 as the sole DPU on the westbound Denver-Provo. Well, 777 didn't hang around Provo long! It was the sole DPU on the eastbound Provo-Lincoln on this morning. It was not wyed in Provo, so it was facing the "wrong way" for the trip back east.

Two nights prior to this shot, a loaded 113-car sand train arrived in Denver. The sand was headed for the Craig Branch. UP broke the train up and sent 51 cars west the night before. On this day, another 43 cars were sent west on the train RDVXTS-08. The remaining 19 cars were kept in North Yard to be added to the MNYPHX-08.

A C44-9W is sandwiched between two SD70ACes on the point of this westbound unit sand train, pulling through Barbara's Gulch. A pair of BNSF units bring up the tail end of the 43 car train.

While BNSF still has around 1,400 C44-9Ws on their roster, UP has under 300, and many of those are frequently in storage. So it was a bit of a surprise to find this C44-9W on a westbound sand train. Looks like the unit was involved in some type of fire at some point! The unit was delivered in 1994, arriving as SP 8138. It was only on the Espee roster for six years, as it changed to UP 9602 on November 22, 2000.

A pair of BNSF ES44ACs bring up the tail end of a westbound loaded sand train. UP ran this sand train in two sections so as to avoid any stalls on the Moffat. Probably a wise decision, but not the preferred decision amongst railfans...the original plan called for a power configuration of 3x4x2, had the entire train run west!

Got power? Twelve units glide east down the main at Plain...but why east? Light power like will head west, destined for the Glenwood Springs yard to be used as mid-train swing helpers on coal trains. So why are these units headed east? The answer is because eight of the units are being moved from "dead lines" in Grand Junction to "dead lines" in North Platte, NE. UP has hundreds of units in long term storage in Grand Junction. These eight are being moved...possibly to be sold off at auction.

A dozen units round Big Ten Curve on their journey east toward Denver. Denver will only be a temporary stop, however, as eight of these units are headed for North Platte, NE. The reason? Most likely either for long term storage or to be sold at auction.

An eastbound light power move highballs west Rocky while a westbound sand train sits on the main at Eisele. Shortly before this shot was taken, the light power moved met the sand train. The sand train has not departed yet because the dispatcher is having difficulty getting the west switch at Eisele to throw from the siding to the main.

A former Espee AC4400CW leads a light power move out of East Rocky on a clear signal. Eight units are being moved from Grand Junction, CO to North Platte, NE. UP 6191 was delivered as SP 143 in April of 1995. It was moved to the UP roster, getting its new number, on November 4, 2003.

Remember the horsepower race at the end of the 1990s? Railroads wanted more horsepower and EMD produced its SD90MAC and GE produced its AC6000CW, each with 6000 HP. But neither were quite ready for primetime, so EMD made over 300 SD9043MACs and GE made its AC6044CWs. They had 4400 HP, but were designed to have the prime mover swapped out for the 6000 HP counterparts when ready. The only problem was they never really were ready! Here, an AC6044CW heads east at Rocky, clearly defined by its large radiator blister at the back end.

Here is a bit of a classic unit! One of the first wide cabs that GE ever came out with could be found on the C41-8W. This unit was originally delivered to UP in September 1993 and, based on how its looking, this is probably the original paint job!

UP changed their paint scheme (for the first time in quite some time) after their acquired Chicago and Northwestern by adding a slight lightning bolt to the red stripe near the top of the unit. This C44-9W was originally CNW 8716, delivered in May 1994. After being taken over by UP, the unit was repainted on April 30, 2001...the new lightning bolt scheme applied.

This GP15-1 was built in July 1977 and was delivered to Missouri Pacific as MP 1598. It went to UP 1598 after UP acquired MP, and was then changed to UPY 598 in April 2004 as UP was rearranging the roster.
