This westbound oil empty has reached the western end of the Dotsero Cutoff, at Dotsero. The train just knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end. The same control point at East Dotsero also provides access to Tennessee Pass from the west. You can see the track just above the the spot where the oil train winds to the left. The Minturn Local (which hasn't run as far in Minturn in decades) still runs a few miles to Gypsum on the west end.

The eastbound Rockies to the Red Rocks crosses over the Eagle River as it starts on the west end of Dotsero Cutoff. The mileposts here change from the distance to Denver via Pueblo (342 miles) to the distance to Denver direct over the Moffat (164 miles). The Eagle River, which follows Tennessee Pass on its west slope, joins the Colorado River here at Dotsero.

A pair of BNSF GE DPUs bring up the tail end of a westbound Denver-Provo manifest. Dotsero is where the Moffat (via the Dotsero cutoff) and Tennessee Pass converged on the journey west. You can see a leg of the branch that heads west toward Tennessee Pass in the shot. The train has just crossed over the Eagle river, which joins the Colorado River here at Dotsero.

Nearing the west end of the Dotsero Cutoff, the westbound Zephyr emerges from behind trees that are in the middle of their transition from summer to fall. A beautiful time to ride the rails through the Rockies!

At the west end of the Dotsero Cutoff, you find the small town of Dotsero. Here, the Eagle River, which Tennessee Pass follows for quite awhile, converges with the Colorado River. The Zephyr is crossing over the Eagle River and is in fact passing by the far west end of Tennessee Pass on a beautiful July day.

The westbound Zephyr glides along the Colorado River just a few miles east of Dotsero. AMTK 156 was taken off the Winter Park Express a week earlier as the Zephyr needed it for power. It was then returned to Chicago for a 92-day inspection, and is now back on the Zephyr once again!

The curves of the track along the Dotsero Cutoff are, in general, not quite as tight as those on other parts of the Moffat. As a result, the Zephyr is able to move along the cutoff at speeds around 50 MPH. Here, the Zephyr is at track speed as it glides down the grade that averages around 0.3%.

The Eastbound Zephyr just left Dotsero and is now on the Dotsero Cutoff. The cutoff was started in 1932 and was completed in 1934. The cutoff, running nearly 40 miles, connected the mainline of the Denver and Salt Lake at Bond, CO to the mainline of the Denver and Rio Grande Western at Dotsero, CO. By the 1930s, the D&RGW controlled the D&SL, so the cutoff created a far more direct route between Denver and Salt Lake City.

The eastbound California Zephyr is rolling on clear signals about two miles east of Dotsero. The train is running on time as it heads down the Dotsero Cutoff toward Bond. Amtrak is taking advantage of the slow season (ridership is generally down in winter months) and is reducing long distanced trains to just six Superliners. This is allowing them to refurbish some of the cars. Interestingly, while they are doing this, the Lounge Car is being placed directly behind the baggage car. Generally, it is in the middle of the train next to the Dining Car.

I love this picture. It just seems to peaceful. The Zephyr is on the Dotsero cutoff here between Dotsero and Range, following along the Colorado River. What more really needs to be said!?

Two mainlines converge (or diverge, depending on your point of view) at this location. This coal load is coming from Grand Junction and is headed toward the Dotsero Cutoff and the Moffat Mainline. To the left is of course Tennessee Pass, now defunct for nearly ten years.

Number 5 meets Number 6 at Dotsero! The eastbound California Zephyr (on the right) has been waiting here at Dotsero for over a half an hour, making it now over four hours late. It was waiting for its counterpart, the westbound California Zephyr (running three hours late) to appear.

Running nearly three hours late, Amtrak 5 leaves the Dotsero cutoff behind and curves west to follow the Rio Grande mainline west toward Glenwood Canyon. The track visible to the right of Amtrak is the south leg of wye connecting the Dotsero cutoff with Tennessee Pass.

Two SD70M's sit on the east leg of the wye at Dotsero. The SD70M's are on the point of a work train that has been tied down on the wye for the night.
