UP 9795 crosses over a very low South Platte River, a 5500-foot train in tow. UP 9795 was actually originally delivered to Chicago North Western in April 1994. Within the past few years, UP has started a rebuild program, taking some old DC traction motor units, and rebuilding them as AC traction motor units. This is a perfect example!

Yard Shots Union Pacific
Another completed trip from Green River, WY to North Yard here in Denver. UP's MGRNY has arrived and is working on breaking the train up between Track 3 and Track 4 in the yard. At 5500 feet, the train was too long to fit on a single yard track, as Track 3 is only around 3500 feet long.

Just a nice, afternoon overview of North Yard! There isn't much power to spare in the yard this afternoon, with most of the power visible used either in local work or yard job.

A GP40N and an SD40N, both rebuilt from their previous Dash-2 models, sit in the foreground. There is a smattering of classic EMD power sitting around, as the power on UP's MGRNY gets ready to pull away from the train it just brought into the yard.

A pair of geeps sit near the yard office in North Yard. Both of these particular geeps are right at home, as both started as Rio Grande GP40-2s. UP 1357 was originally DRGW 3102, and UP 1358 was originally DRGW 3105.

A westbound oil empty arrived in Denver at 10am. A new crew was called at 9:50am. Upon arriving at North Yard, the crew had to pull power off the train and replace it with new power. UP got rid of all of its hostlers a few years ago, so crews have to shuttle power around themselves. In this shot, the outbound crew is taking three units and putting it back on their train in preparation to head west.

The power for this westbound oil train is about to be hooked up to the west end of the train, ahead of a covered hopper buffer car. After attaching to the train, the crew will knock off handbrakes and charge the air before departing west.

Since UP got rid of their hostlers, road crews have to switch power around. The outbound crew on this oil train had to do exactly that when they got to North Yard. They went on duty at 9:50am, and it is now 2:50pm. So the crew has been on duty for five hours before actually departing west. They have seven hours to make it to Bond.

Here at C&S Junction, BNSF's Golden Sub converges with UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub. Between C&S Junction and Fox Junction, BNSF trains run on UP's main. It is also the only real section of track that crews operating on BNSF's Golden Sub have to run in CTC limits. Meanwhile, a UP oil empty heads west on Main 1. when RTD constructed their G-Line along the UP right-of-way, UP received money to add a second main track between C&S Junction and Arvada. Main 2 is the newer track, indicated by the concrete ties.

A westbound UP oil train crosses Tennyson Street, about a mile west of C&S Junction. This grade crossing is a quite zone now; trains need not user their horns. The crossing is protected by "quad gates", preventing cars from swerving around a single gate. The train is on Main 1. The shot was taken from above BNSF Golden Sub.
