Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
About halfway between the daylighted remains of Tunnel 28 and the still-standing (albeit short) Tunnel 29, the Ski Train heads west in the late afternoon on a cloudy June afternoon. The Ski Train, making a special chartered run, hasn't headed west of Denver in the afternoon since a similar charter on June 19, 2003.

It hadn't happened in four years, but the Ski Train finally made another evening run west of Denver to Winter Park. The train, chartered by Train Collectors Association, departed Union Station at 3pm and 45 minutes later, it was passing just west of Denver with the Denver skyline in the distance.

Do you see the Ski Train in this shot? Definitely not a major component of the picture, but the Kansas (the last car of the Ski Train) can be seen in the distance between Tolland and East Portal. The little yellow school house sits quietly in the valley below the Continental Divide.

Don't you just feel a little refreshed after this shot? Half way through the siding at Cliff, the tracks cross over South Boulder Creek on this wooden trestle. The Kansas crosses the quick-moving water as it continues its journey west.

It is a perfect summer morning in Colorado as the Ski Train heads west at Coal Creek Canyon. Note the Bike Car added in behind the power. What more needs to be said about this one!

It is nearly that time again! The Ski Train will soon be running for its weekly Saturday trips over the summer. Why is it only nearly that time when looking at a shot of the Ski Train heading west? On this day, the Ski Train had been privately chartered for a trip to Winter Park and back, so the public won't be starting for another week. Here, the train runs along the west side of Rennicks where a few container frames await an assignment.

Ever wondered where they store the Ski Train during the off-season? The Ski Train has a couple of tracks reserved at Burnham just for them. The train is broken up over two or three tracks and the power is kept on yet another track. Here, the train will sit (and be worked on) until the summer runs start at the end of June.

Another season is in the books. Revenue runs are completed for the Ski Train until the summer season starts. The last few passengers are making their way off the train on Track 2 and onto the platform at Denver Union Station. In a few days, the train will be taken back to Burnham for maintenance and storage before the summer.

The first clear day after a blizzard in Colorado is always a wonderful day indeed. The Ski Train passes west through a winter wonderful at Plain. Everything has a light dusting of snow on it as the sun has not yet had a chance to melt away the white.

Got snow? You can barely see the train through the thick spring snow flakes falling at Leyden on this Thursday afternoon in March. March snow flakes in Colorado tend to be larger (and wetter) than in the winter. The Ski Train is getting close to completing its final Thursday Ski Train run of 2006-2007 season.
