Before unit trains (mostly oil trains these days, coal trains in the past) head west on the Moffat, UP frequently will do a little power shuffling. Often times adding a unit to a train that came off the relatively flat plains before it heads into the Rockies. Such is the case here as this SD70ACe is waiting for authority from DS-378 to back east onto the point of a westbound oil train, just barely visible way off in the distance. This shot also demonstrates how long the OS at C&S Junction is. It must be one of the longest anywhere, as it is roughly 1/2 a mile between switches! This tunnel was daylight decades ago, but the other tunnels were never renumbered. You can see the east portal of Tunnel 10 ahead, the next tunnel the Zephyr will actually pass through. This relatively short tunnel is the last tunnel from which a view of the plains is possible from both ends of the tunnel. Right around 10 MPH (16 KPH). The train received a restricting signal at the west end of Plain and will continue at this speed until (at least) the east portal of Tunnel 10, the location of the next signal. Upon reaching the west end, they discovered they had a restricting (flashing red) at the west end. I'm not sure why that was the case, but the train will have to proceed west at restricted speed until it encounters a more favorable signal aspect. The train is right on time as it rolls west on the main through a still-snowy plain. After a lot of snow last week, the forecast is much nicer this week, with highs around 55°F (13°C). The train is only going about 15 MPH and is actually slowing as the train has a red signal at CP DS007 (Arvada). These three GEs departed with the train the night before from Grand Junction for the trip east to North Yard. For the last few years, this has been the only UP manifest that runs on the Moffat. Yes, this is indeed a coal empty running east on the Moffat. The train unloaded coal at the power plant in Valmy, NV. The train runs over the Moffat as BNSF has no trackage rights on UP's Overland Route. It will proceed to the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, load up, and head back to Valmy, running west (loaded) over the Moffat. The train is waiting for a fresh crew to come out of Denver to take it the rest of the way in. A substantial snow storm, the third since Monday, has moved in and has started to dump was is expected to be 8 to 10 inches of snow in the next 24 hours!
