A typical eastbound Provo-Denver, led by a ES44DC, departs the east end of Rocky on a clear signal. "Typical" for the BNSF manifest on the Moffat translates to "lots of tank cars".

Hmmm...east meets west? An eastbound BNSF manifest offers up plenty of bell and whistle as it approaches a highrailer holding the siding at Rocky.

At the west end of Rocky, an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver heads down the main toward little Ten Curve. The fifth unit is a Utah Railway MK50-3. These units time on Utah Railway have come to an end and they are being sent to the KYLE Railroad in eastern Colorado and western Kansas.

The westbound Denver-Provo is just about to clear the grade crossing at Carr Street. The City of Arvada has installed "quad crossings" and soon this crossing will become a quiet zone as trains will no longer use their horns. The two poles on either side of the train are a high/wide detector. If anything is hanging off the train that won't fit through the tunnels in the Tunnel District, they trip one of the wires, notifying the dispatcher.

A pair of good old C44-9Ws, both in Heritage 2 paint, bring up the rear of the westbound Denver-Provo. It is becoming increasingly rare to find C44-9Ws alone on these trains as ES44s and ET44s have become so dominant in the last few years.

A westbound BNSF Denver-Provo starts its journey west out of Denver. The train got held up at Utah Jct for about 20 minutes as DS-86 and the Corridor Manager figured out what to do about a coal train at Leyden (which was ultimately tied down there). No doubt the Grand Junction-based crew will be happy to return back home. As is common for a lot of the BNSF Denver/Provo trains, this train was about 95% tank cars. Also of note is the ET44C4 leading the train!

Not a bad consist at all on this BNSF Provo-Denver manifest. Two C44-9Ws, an ES40DC, two ES44C4s, and an SD70MAC. At least EMD got a little bit of the action. The train is slowing to a stop in the siding at Leyden. Here, it will have to wait for a couple hours as there is currently "no room at the inn" in Denver.

I'm always happy to grab a shot of a Kansas City Southern unit in Retro-Belle paint! This SD70MAC looks pretty sharp in the red/yellow/black paint job.

When the Evolution Series engines were first released by GE, CSX and Norfolk Southern both ordered units that were only 4,000 horsepower instead of the typical 4,400 horsepower. One such example is this ES40DC. The railroads believed they could save on fuel and that the extra 400 horses were not needed.

In addition to four orange BNSF units, the Provo-Denver sports two visitors on this chilly February afternoon. A CSX ES40DC and a KCS SD70MAC join in the fun. Note the lead unit is a C44-9W, repainted in the New Image scheme.

About 90 minutes before coming out to shoot the Provo-Denver, I shot a (very late) Zephyr at Leyden. At that time, visibility was fine and there was just some very light snow. Then, Mother Nature moved in quickly and brought a blizzard with her. Roads went from barely being wet to being sheets of ice! Granted, that is a moot point for this manifest as it slows in the siding at Leyden.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver makes its way through poor visibility and snow in the siding at Leyden. DS-86 would have to hold the train at Leyden due to a lack of open routes and tracks in Denver.

On a beautiful February day (that set a new record high in the Denver area at 72°F), an eastbound BNSF manifest glides past the old Mesa Oil plant located off CO-72. Mesa Oil moved to a new location in Denver over a year ago, removing a customer for UP's West Local to service. The plant has stood abandoned since Mesa Oil left.

A Canadian National ES44DC - one of only 125 on the roster - visits Colorado on a BNSF manifest. I have to admit that I am a fan of the Canadian National paint scheme. Simple yet classy!

After meeting a coal empty at Rocky, this Provo-Denver manifest is now rolling east through Barbara's Gulch with a clear shot the rest of the way into town. The original crew that took the train out of Grand Junction could only make it as far as Cliff. There, a Denver-based relief crew took over for the rest of the journey into Denver.
