A sole ES44C4 brings up the tail end of a westbound BNSF manifest. At just over 3,000 feet in length, the train is not particularly long compared to other trains on the Moffat. Were this a coal train, the front of the train would be visible on the track in the distance on the approach to Tunnel 1.

A view of a westbound BNSF manifest from Jefferson County Open Space from above the tracks. The train is just passing by the hotbox detector at MP 22.6 and will soon cross CO-72 at the mouth of Coal Creek Canyon and climb the grade to Tunnel 1. The east portal of Tunnel 1 is partially visible in the background.

A trio of BNSF GEs lead a westbound manifest at the Blue Mountain Road grade crossing. The second unit is sometimes colloquially referred to as a "Goat Boat". The "goat" portion of the term comes first from the Great Northern Railway, a predecessor of BNSF (and Burlington Northern). The Great Northern used a goat in its logo and had a paint scheme very similar to the "Heritage" paint scheme worn by this second unit. The "boat" portion of the term comes from the old reference to GE units as "U-Boats".

Just west of Eisele, a westbound BNSF Denver to Provo manifest approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. The train is led by an ET44C4, followed by a C44-9W, and a ES44DC.

I missed the era when C30-7s rang dominant on many railroads. At least, I missed that era as far as photography goes. I still remember train chasing with my dad. I'd have to say that the C44-9W was the replacement for the C30-7, as far as its popularity goes, with railroads in the 1990s and early 2000s. While that era is also on its way out, you can still find plenty of "Crash-9s", as they are sometimes (unaffectionately) referred to, on BNSF trains.

Clouds from a storm in the Colorado high country are slowly creeping out on to the plains, obscuring the sun as this Lincoln to Denver manifest departs the siding at Rocky. Interestingly, this was the second Lincoln to Denver manifest to roll east over the Moffat on this particular day.

Traffic on the Moffat has dropped to an average of 6-8 trains in any given 24 hour period. This Friday was an exception as a total of 13 trains ran through the Moffat Tunnel. Three of them are visible right here in this shot! An eastbound Lincoln to Provo manifest sits int he siding at Rocky, having just received a relief crew out of Denver. Gotta love the single box car cut in the otherwise-perfect unit tank train! A westbound BNSF Denver to Provo is visible in the siding at Eisele, meeting an eastbound coal load which is on the main.

A pair of DPUs bring up the tail end of the Denver-Provo manifest as it wraps its way around Big Ten Loop. As you can tell from the exhaust they are pumping out, they are working quite hard to keep the train moving west!

A westbound BNSF manifest approaches a clear signal at MP 16.1, just east of Rocky. The train will be meeting an eastbound coal load at Eisele (formerly Clay). In fact, if you look closely, you'll see said coal train already holding the main at Eisele in the distance!

The sun came out to light up the scene for the DPUs on the this westbound Denver to Provo manifest. Fall foliage helps to decorate the scene.

Perhaps you've heard of a "sucker hole" as it relates to outdoor photography. When conditions tend to be overcast, a "sucker hole" refers to a break in the clouds that lights up the tracks, offering great light on the subject. On this afternoon, I managed to catch a great "sucker cloud"! Lighting at this spot was perfect until about 30 seconds before this Denver to Provo showed up. Ah well...there's always next time.

BNSF's westbound Denver to Provo is grinding away west of Leyden. An ET44C4 leads the train which, among other things, includes several steel coil cars and a quintet of single-stacked well cars.

You couldn't ask for better light than this right here! It is a beautiful morning in the Denver-area here at the start of fall. A trio of GEs (including an ES44C4 on the point) glide east on the point of a Provo, UT to Lincoln, NE manifest. The train is approaching the Simms Street grade crossing, one of several "quiet zone" crossing that are now in the city of Arvada.

The front range of the Colorado Rockies stands tall in the distance, offering a nice backdrop for BNSF's eastbound Provo, UT to Lincoln, NE manifest. The train would continue to Utah Junction, where it waited on the North Yard Siding for Amtrak, before continuing into the yard.

A northbound BNSF coal empty crosses over the four UP main tracks on the west side of Cheyenne. A major afternoon thunder storm has passed by the area and provides fantastic contrast.
