Passengers on board the California Zephyr have made a 4,000-foot elevation gain in the last 50 miles, going from (roughly) 5,200-feet above sea level in Denver to (roughly) 9,200-feet above sea level here at East Portal. In the distance, one of the peaks of the Continental Divide (in between James Peak and Mt Epworth) stands tall. Soon, the Zephyr will be underneath the divide!

As the westbound Zephyr crosses the grade crossing at East Portal, a bit of snow is kicked up! Cars crossing the tracks combined with blowing snow has resulted in a bit of a build up on the crossing.

Welcome to the highest point on any mainline still active in the United States! We are just over 9,100 feet above sea level at the east switch of East Portal, just over a mile away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Technically, the train does still have a little elevation to gain, as it will top out at 9,236 feet above sea level. Today's Zephyr, running a little tardy, glides through blowing snow and a chilly 5°F.

Things have slowed on the Moffat a bit lately. The westbound Zephyr, heading west through Barbara's Gulch, is the first westbound in 15 hours! After a nice burst in coal traffic, there are no coal empties on the lineup, so trains are a bit light at the moment.

With the remaining snow on the ground and silver streak of Amtrak's Superliners, spotting Amtrak is this shot is a little bit like Where's Waldo! Once you spot it, you will not that the "Honor Our Veterans" unit (AMTK 42) is on the point on this morning.

A great January blizzard blows through the Front Range of the Rockies as the California Zephyr, running right on time, approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. It's a good day to be riding, checking out the winter landscape from the warmth of the Lounge car!

Amtrak's "Pointless Arrow"...the first scheme that Amtrak ever had...looks pretty good as it dashes through the snow on the point of the Winter Park Express.

I'm going to guess that passenger on board the Winter Park Express are very happy to be there. Warm, dry, and not behind the wheel, on the way to slopes. The train is approaching a clear intermediate at Kipling Street.

The westbound Zephyr, with seven Superliners, passes by the somewhat woodsy east end of Leyden. The seen makes this area appear to be a bit more remote, perhaps, then is actually is.

The westbound Zephyr is coming up to milepost 12 at the east end of Leyden. The train is accelerating toward the track speed of 60 MPH here. In about 4 miles, however, he'll have to slow down to 30 MPH.
