This shot is somewhat deceiving in that it looks as though it could have been taken in the middle of nowhere. In fact, turning in either direction would reveal office buildings as we are right in the middle of Boulder! This northbound double stack is approaching the south end of the Boulder siding.

After being held briefly for the Longmont Turn to clear up at Valmont, this Seattle-bound double stack is on the move again in Boulder. The train has just crossed over the 55th Street grade crossing. The switch in the foreground is the south end of the Boulder siding.

There was a time when a quartet of SD40-2s could be found leading the highest priority trains on the railroad. In 2011, you can find them running on locals. But, then again, at least you can still find them in 2011!

The newest siding on the Front Range Sub is Longs Peak located a couple miles north of Longmont. Prior to the installation of this 7,700 foot siding, it was about 60 miles from Broomfield (9,000 feet) to the next siding longer than 4,000 feet. That siding is North Yard located in Fort Collins.

On this Friday afternoon, BNSF's daily Denver to Laurel manifest departs north from the main after meeting the Longmont Turn, approaching the south switch on the siding.

Due to floods in the midwest, the Front Range Sub has seen a fair amount of rerouted traffic this summer. Such was the case on this Thursday afternoon as an empty BNSF northbound enters the siding at Broomfield. The train is meeting a southbound...but the train won't fit west of Nickel Street, so the crossing will have to be cut.

The last unit on this coal load blasts past this grade crossing just outside Lingle, WY. This would be the last we would see of this particular train as it continues east on the Valley Sub.

Just west of Grattan, WY finds this coal load heading east on the single track mainline. The Valley Sub has a mix of single track with sidings and two main tracks to accommodate the traffic.

While one crew prepares the BNSF 6267 for DPU operations, an eastbound coal load is heading east for the Valley Subdivision where it will continue on to Bridgeport, NE.

Eastbound coal loads coming through Guernsey pull down one of two mains to a diesel servicing facility in the Guernsey yard. This is a crew change point on the railroad and a fresh crew is on the BNSF 6064, ready to take the train east to Sterling, CO.

There was exactly one SD60M on BNSF's roster that received a repaint in the Heritage 1 scheme...and this is it! BNSF 8177 sits in the yard at Guernsey waiting to head east on the Valley Sub.

The conductor speaks with the engineer to coordinate a reverse move with a string of five units at the east end of the Guernsey yard. Note the green light visible in the distance. BNSF has installed push-button switches in the yard, making it a lot easier for the crews to throw the switches. The green light is an indicator that the switch is in the normal position. Yellow indicates a reversed switch.

Now here is a pretty cool consist! A crew switches around a pair of ES44ACs, a pair of Oakway SD60s and an SD60M (wearing the Heritage scheme). The crew was in the process of taking the fifth unit (BNSF 6267) and setting it up as the tail end DPU unit on their train.

In order to get into Guernsey, WY, the BNSF Canyon Sub must cross the North Platte River. It does so over a truly impressive bridge just west of the switch into the yard. Here, an eastbound load crosses the river and enters the yard on a crystal clear, 90°F day.
