In 2001, they received six MK5000Cs. These unique units were rebuilds by Morrison Knudsen. In 2003, their MK prime movers were replaced with EMD prime movers and they were redesignated as MK50-3s. At the end of 2016, Utah Railway lost their last coal contract and a century of coal hauling for the railroad came to an end. It reminds me of Rio Grande and the cool operating agreement the two railroads had (and Utah Railway and UP continue to have) over Soldier Summit. So, on rare occasion, when a Utah engine makes its way to Colorado, it is always good to see. Unfortunately, when this GP40 returns to Utah, it will most likely be wearing the orange paint scheme of the Genesee and Wyoming. It is likely headed to Panama City, FL where it will receive electrical upgrades (being re-designated as a GP40-3) and also a new Genesee and Wyoming (orange) paint scheme. Utah Railway 3002 is a GP40, built in 1970 and most recently owned by Kansas City Southern before showing up on Utah Railway property in 2006. It is most likely being moved to Panama City, FL where it will receive an electrical upgrade and a repaint and return to Utah Railway as a GP40-3.
