A Ferromex SD70ACe is sandwiched in between two BNSF C44-9Ws, both still sporting the Heritage 2 paint scheme. The train is slowing to a stop on the siding at Leyden. It will wait for a UP coal empty to come out of town and meet it here. The wait will not be long as the empty is leaving Arvada, a few miles to the east, at this time.

20 years ago, in May 2001, Microsoft released Microsoft Train Simulator. It was a great game for its time, and it feature BNSF's High Line over Marias Pass. On the cover of the box was BNSF 4723. BNSF actually added a decal to the cab to advertise the game. That sticker has persisted for 20 years. This is actually the first time I've been able to get a shot of it!

On a crystal clear June day, UP's Grand Junction to North Yard manifest rolls down the main at Leyden on a Clear (green) signal. The tracks here parallel 82nd Avenue on either side. There is (obviously) no bridge to connect 82nd Avenue over the tracks, so it continues east on the north side of the tracks and west on the south side of the tracks. There have been talks of building a bridge over the tracks here that would connect Alkire Street. So far, those have indeed only been talks.

So GECX 4823 was clearly BNSF 4823. At it appears that the sale to GECX was extremely recent. I found a picture of BNSF 4823 (still as BNSF) in a shot from August 2020 in Iowa. Granted, that shot had it in a deadline, for perhaps it was sold directly from there in the last few months to GECX. Kinda interesting how BNSF sells off a unit like this, only to then pay to lease it back!

BNSF trains have basically become the staple of the Moffat, particularly in the last 2-3 years. With coal virtually gone at the moment, and UP only running a manifest three days a week each way (so one manifest each of six days of the week), BNSF has kept some trains moving on the Moffat with an average of two manifests (one each way) per day.

The eastbound Zephyr meets a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo which has had the unfortunately luck of being stuck in the siding for the last five hours. A track maintainer found a track issue around Coal Creek Canyon that required repairing before allowing a train to roll over it. It was fixed in time for the Zephyr, and now the manifest will finally get a green signal to head west. However, the train will only go as far as Pinecliff before taking the siding again for a recrew. The train spent so much time at Rocky, the crew only has another five hours to work. So a fresh crew will take the train to Grand Junction from Cliff.
