At Union, BNSF's Brush Sub connected with the Julesburg Sub and BNSF coal train had trackage rights on the Julesburg Sub for 25 miles to Sterling. In 1993, UP abandoned the Julesburg Sub from Union to Kersey (near La Salle) and ripped the track out. Now, at Union, operations switch from CTC to TWC/ABS and ownership changes from BNSF to UP. However, BNSF dispatches the line between Union and Sterling as they have the only trains that run on the tracks! This is where the BNSF Brush Sub connected with the UP Julesburg Sub. In 1993, UP abandoned and ripped up the Julesburg Sub between Union and Kersey (near La Salle). In this shot, I would have been standing in the middle of the UP tracks. Now, the switch is gone and the line just curves to the BNSF Brush Sub. Coal trains use the Brush Sub to head toward the Power River Basin in Wyoming. This coal empty is just a few miles north of Brush running on an approach signal. A westbound coal load has an H2 SD70MAC flying back on the main track. After the coal load clears, BNSF 6069 will get a clear signal to continue east. It is 155 miles across the Akron Sub to McCook, NE for this Z-Train. Incidentally, this is the same route that the California Zephyr takes, although it usually hits this section of track at night... At least once per day, UP comes to 31st Street from 36th Street to drop off and pick up interchange cars. Likewise, BNSF heads to North Yard from 31st Street to do the same. That's a distance of close to 50 miles. So, it is unusual when a train passes through Broomfield without having to stop to meet another train! This UP unit pipe train is being led by an all-BNSF consist. The BNSF units would ultimately be removed in Denver before the train continued west to Empire, CO on the Craig Branch. The 49 flat cars of pipe are being taken to Empire, CO where an underground gas line is being built. The train is approaching the Wagner Street overpass in Strasburg. The train would have to hold at Broomfield for about two hours to wait for a southbound to come to Broomfield. Once in the clear, the rail train will drop new welded rail along the tracks at milepost 17, about two miles (rail) north of Broomfield. A rail train came north on the Front Range Sub to drop off some welded rail along the tracks near milepost 17.
