This is not an uncommon view to find here on my website...with one notable exception! Typically there isn't a train actually on the Lafayette Industrial Lead. Burns Junction is the location where the C&S main and the CB&Q main diverged and took their own routes to Longmont. Today, the old CB&Q main on the right only runs as far as Lafayette and only serves a few industries along the line.

After picking up five bulkhead flats from the Lafayette Lumber Company, the Longmont Switch is headed back down the branch line to the main line in Broomfield. The train is about to pass the new Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center just off to the left in this shot. The Northwest Parkway can be seen in the foreground.

BNSF's Longmont Switch (posing as the Buck Local) runs from the main track in Broomfield up the spur branch to Lafayette. Typically, this local runs at night. However, due to maintenance on the north end of the main track, the local ran in daylight on this Thursday afternoon! Here, the local is back across US-287 while traffic patiently waits.

The weather was all over the place on this particular afternoon. Clear skies could be found to the east while a thunderstorm rolls in over the front range of the Rockies. This is BNSFs QSTDVJ-04, which was almost 7,000 feet long when it left Grand Junction! At this point, the train was about 6,000 feet long after dropping off several cars in Kremmling.

The HPASSAG has become a very common train on the Front Range Sub, showing up just about daily in addition to the HLAUDEN and HDENLAU. BNSF 844 is one of the few C40-8Ws to wear the New Image scheme as of this date. The train is about to pass underneath US-36 just south of the siding of Broomfield.

In the 1980s, Santa Fe ran a high priority intermodal from Big Lift (south of Denver on the Joint Line) to La Juanta. The train was symboled QDVLJ and QLJDV. It was very common for this train to run with GP30s, GP35s and GP39-2s. Some twenty years later, it was a nice surprise to find a GP30 and a GP35 - both wearing the Yellow Bonnet - heading to town from the Golden Spur.

This train might be running on BNSF's Golden Subdivision, which primarily serves to transport cars into and out of the Coors Brewing company, but this is not the so-called "Beer Run". It is actually the Golden Switch job. There are several industries that run along the line that have nothing to do with Coors that need to be switched. Here, the switch job is bringing a few cars into town.

This is a scene that will be changing a lot in the next five years! Those buildings in the distance originally housed a company called StorageTek, although as of the time of this photo they were being leased to Sun Microsystems through the end of 2008. ConocoPhillips has purchased the "campus" and will tear down the existing buildings (beginning in 2009) in favor a brand new buildings as part of a new 432-acre training facility. For now, however, this HPASSAG is making its way south on the main at Broomfield.
