The train encountered a few yellow signals coming up from Rocky, as it was following the MNYGJ. That manifest is in the siding, visible through the trees to the left. The Zephyr has what has become a typical seven Superliner consist. Standard in the current days of the pandemic. Typically, at this time of year, the train would have eight or nine Superliners. Waiting in the siding at Eisele (Clay) is BNSF's Provo-Denver. It has 54 cars today, with four on the point and two DPUs on the tail end. The train is meeting UP's westbound North Yard to Grand Junction manifest, approaching the train on the main. This (rare) morning westbound is no exception, as it has 93 cars. Three units are on the point, a then there is a single DPU 3/4 of the way back in the train and a single DPU on the rear. The train is currently operating using a PTC software program called "Trip Optimizer". That software will crap out just ahead, causing the power on the train to drop to idle. The engineer will shut the software down and manually throttle the train back up. The train slowed to about 3 MPH when that happened, but the engineer kept it from stalling out. A big reason why? Only four patched AC4400CWs are still on UP's roster! UP has repainted 275 of the original 279 AC4400CWs that were on Espee roster when UP and SP merged in 1996. With an unusual morning departure from North Yard, the train will have to take the siding at some point in order to let the westbound Zephyr get around it. For several years after the UP/SP merger, when BNSF first got trackage rights on the Moffat, BNSF ran manned helpers from Denver to East Portal, cutting off at East Portal and running back to Denver light. The City of Arvada attempted to get a Federal Grant to rebuild this bridge in order to widen Indiana Street to four lanes through there. However, the grant was denied, so Indiana remains two lanes. Meanwhile, additional homes and a new strip mall are being built int he background, which will of course add more traffic to Indiana! A lot of the homes for those new residents are evident in this shot, looking north from Leyden where the Denver-Provo sits in the siding. 30 years ago, a good amount of what was visible in this shot would have been rolling hills! Not long ago, Leyden was often used multiple times every day for meets. However, with the decreased traffic on the Moffat, this is only the fourth time the siding has been used in July 2020.
