It is here that trains can either run straight into the west yard at Golden, or turn south (on the diverging route) and enter the east yard. For the past several weeks (if not months), the Beer Run has had one big (new) motor and a second smaller (old) motor. On this day, it was an ES44AC and an SD40-2. The train is moving a fair amount of refined gasoline toward Utah. The train is holding at Leyden for a meet with an eastbound coal load. This westbound manifest (the MDENPVO-01) is smoking a bit as it departs westbound. The train consists largely of tank cars coming from the Suncor Refinery in Commerce City. I happened to catch this same unit on the Joint Line in January 2006, and it was in the H2 scheme on that day. The unit was involved in a head-on collision (and completely destroyed) in June 2006 and was rebuilt in Mexico in June 2007. KCS 4008 came off the Moffat the day before on BNSF's Stockton to Denver trackage rights train. That third unit out is actually a DIC SW1500 in BNSF's New Image paint scheme. BNSF trains headed to or from the Joint Line cross the diamond (on one of the two main tracks). The Buck Main crosses the north end of the Joint Line, connection Union Station with Prospect Junction (and beyond). BNSF also uses the Buck Main to wye power. At Utah Junction, the train will stop and meet Amtrak 5. Amtrak will take the North Yard siding from Utah Junction west to C&S Junction. However, every once in a while, you'll catch a reroute or an unscheduled extra train. Such was the case here with BNSF's V-HYDDEN3-09A. This was a Vehicle Train running from Hauser Yard, ID to Denver, CO. The train - comprised of more double stacks than auto racks - was holding short of MP 16, waiting for instructions from Rennicks Yard on where to go! The "TAC-DEN" is typically composed of auto racks and double stacks. On this day, all the auto racks were on the point and the double stacks are on the rear.
