Even though the sun has technically risen, it stills looks to be blue hour out as the Winter Park Express heads west at MP 14. There is a small winter storm blowing through this morning. Snow is lightly falling, but the wind is blowing hard. It is 30°F (-1°C) out, but with the wind, it feels like it is about 10°F (-12°C).

Just west of Leyden, the Winter Park Express Ski Train is making its way west. Two additional coaches have been added to the train since last weekend. Amtrak worked with Winter Park and the State of Colorado to expand service. The train will have seven cars (six coaches plus the lounge car) for the rest of the season, and it will run Thursdays through Mondays!

The westbound Zephyr was delayed by about two hours when departing Chicago the previous day due to mechanical issues. Later on the journey in Nebraska, between Hastings and McCook, the Zephyr was delayed another three hours due to a broken rail. The mid-west has been experiencing some extreme cold weather, and it has caused some havoc on the rails. Trying to make up time, the Zephyr is headed west from Leyden, just over five hours late.

Mechanical issues before departing Chicago, and then severe weather in the mid-west has resulted in a more than five hour delay for the westbound Zephyr when it departed Denver today. Just west of Leyden, the train is making track speed, attempting to make up time.

All of the equipment and all of the skiers have been loaded onto the Winter Park Express Ski Train here at the Winter Park Resort. Amtrak conductor Antonio is closing up the baggage compartment on one of the coach/baggage cars so the train can make its departure east, into the Moffat Tunnel, and on to Denver.

Most of the passengers and equipment have been loaded on the Winter Park Express Ski Train. However, a few folks are still working to get their equipment turned in. You can see the open door on to the baggage compartment on the coach/baggage car, with ski racks standing inside to hold people equipment for the trip to Denver.

After a long day of skiing, snow boarding, or other activities here in Winter Park, folks board the "Eagle" coach car from the platform. This year, Amtrak is giving names to all of the coach cars on the Ski Train to make it easier for passengers to remember which car is there, and find it on the platform. It can be a bit disorienting when the engines change position, but the cars themselves do not!

The eastbound Winter Park Express is stopped on the main track alongside the heated platform here at the Winter Park Ski Resort. Passengers are working to get their equipment loaded, as well as themselves loaded, onto the train for the return trip to Denver. The train is running about 30 minutes late due to a CTC issue at the west end of Fraser.

Looking out the vestibule window on the end of the coach car on the Winter Park Express Ski Train, we look directly into the face of AMTK 75, sporting the Phase 7 paint scheme. This P42DC was the leader on the train this morning, but is now the trailing unit for the journey back to Denver. Right now, the train is in between Fraser and Winter Park.

The sun has dipped behind the mountains to the west of Fraser as the eastbound Winter Park Express Ski Train slowly approaches the station at Fraser where a dozen or so passengers await to board the train and take it back to Denver. After stopping in Fraser, the train will continue on to Winter Park to pick up roughly 260 skiers and snowboarders.

After backing out of the siding of Fraser to the west, the Winter Park Express Ski Train is now rolling east on the main track. Several passengers await on the platform at Fraser to be picked up by the Winter Park Express to head east to Denver.

With its station stop complete, the eastbound California Zephyr is pulling away from the depot at Fraser. You can see the exhaust the P42DCs are kicking up as they throttle up to accelerate. In the distance, the Winter Park Express Ski Train is currently making a reverse move. It will back out the west end of Fraser onto the main, the come east on the main to the Fraser station to pick up passengers.

The conductor for the eastbound Zephyr stands on the platform at Fraser, looking over the few remaining passengers on the platform that are making their way back to their car. The station stop is nearly complete, and the lead P42DC has let out a couple of horn blasts, warning passengers it is time to climb on board.

Not long before sunset, a bit of the sun finally breaks through, lighting up the two different Amtrak trains here at Fraser. A decade ago, I never would have expected to see a pair of Amtrak trains stopped in Fraser! Once the Zephyr is gone, the Ski Train will pull up to the station on the main and pick up its passengers.

AMTK 140 leads the eastbound Zephyr, currently stopped on the main track here at Fraser. Many people have gotten off the train for a fresh air (or smoke) brake. It is not too uncommon for someone on the train to get off and experience snow for the first time!
