Just west of the west switch of Rocky, the morning Zephyr is running on time as it works to climb the grade on Big Ten Curve. AMTK 187, sporting Amtrak's Phase 7 paint scheme, is on the point for the journey to Emeryville, CA.

The morning Zephyr is viewed from the north side of the rails at Rocky as it approach the turnout to the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead, seen climbing the 8% grade up the hill to the left. There are a lot of clouds on this mostly overcast morning, allowing for some shots from the usually shady side of the tracks.

The Winter Park Express has expanded service, currently running with seven coaches and a sightseer/lounge car. The train is just over 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) above sea level here at East Portal, in the middle of a frozen winter wonderland. The Continental Divide is snow-covered, the peaks in the background are around 13,000 feet (almost 4,000 meters) above sea level. The train just emerged from the Moffat Tunnel, and is running right on time for its journey back to Denver.

In the midst of the blue hour, the Winter Park Express Ski Train has emerged from the Moffat Tunnel and is headed east on a clear (green) signal. As you can see, we are definitely stuck in the dead of winter hear at 9,000 feet above sea level.

DS-378 has set up a nice meet here at Rocky between the westbound California Zephyr and an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. The conductor on the Provo-Denver is just climbing down off the head end in order to give a roll by to the Zephyr. There isn't a cloud in the sky, which is resulting in slightly colder temperatures, right around 20°F (-7°C) at the moment.

Just west of Tunnel 1, AMTK 75 and AMTK 146 lead the Winter Park Express westbound. This season, with the train running five days a week, AMTK 75 will lead westbound on Friday and Sunday for one week, then least westbound on Thursday, Saturday, Monday the next. So both units will be on the point (on varying days) eastbound and westbound.

Four seconds before 8am, and the Winter Park Express is climbing the 2% grade from the base of Coal Creek Canyon up toward Tunnel 1. So far this season, the morning Ski Train has been running on time, and usually arriving Winter Park a few minutes early. The eastbound train has been late more often, but I'm sure skiers would prefer to have the evening train late over the morning train.

I really enjoy the westbound morning run of the Winter Park Express toward the start of the season. When the train reaches Leyden, such as in this shot, the sun has just barely crested the horizon to the east, just about 20 minutes after sunrise. The glinting sun off the side of the P42s and seven Superliners just cannot be beat!

Yesterday morning, thanks to the weather, the Winter Park Express left Leyden in a nice "blue hour" light. This morning, all the clouds have cleared and the Winter Park Express as the Winter Park Express knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden in glorious "golden hour" light.

It is cold and overcast this morning as the westbound Zephyr passes through western Arvada, just west of Leyden. Despite severe weather in the mid-west, the Zephyr is right on time this morning.

The westbound Zephyr came to town with an extra coach this morning. The extra coach was dropped off in Denver because one of the coaches on the Winter Park Express has defective bathrooms. The coaches will be swapped out tonight, and the defective coach will likely head to Chicago tomorrow evening. Here, the Zephyr is just west of Leyden.

The Winter Park Express has just emerged from Tunnel 1 on its journey west to Winter Park. The train is running about 20 minutes early today. Passengers onboard have to be really happy they are not currently on I-70.

The Winter Park Express is hustling along at track speed west of Leyden as some snow is falling. This is the first day of expanded service. Two coaches were added to the Winter Park Express this week. This is the longest the train has been under Amtrak in the last few years.
