The Zephyr is moving at track speed as it clips through a February blizzard west of Leyden. It is just a few minutes before noon and the snow really picked up within the past hour. It is falling at a rate of about 1 1/2 inches per hour, making for some extreme, but beautiful, conditions for photography.

The two P42DCs on the point of the Zephyr is about all you can see emerging from the blizzard. The train is about three hours late on this morning, but regardless of the delay, I am sure passengers are very happy to be warm on board the train.

The westbound Zephyr is running about three hour behind schedule as it starts to become visible through a vicious February blizzard that has a lot of snow and wind and a temperature of only 15°F (-9°C) out.

Ahhh, Colorado weather! At 4am, there was not a cloud in the sky. By 8am, there was over three inches of fresh snow and it was still coming down. Highways were shut down in the Denver-Metro area and commutes to school that usually take 15 minutes were taking an hour or more. Then, by noon, the sun was out and snow was melting. Here, at 3:30pm, the roads were just west and was able to easily get track side to capture a seven hour late Zephyr just west of Leyden amongst the freshly fallen snow.

On a snowy January afternoon, a tardy westbound Zephyr has excellent afternoon light. Bad weather on the plains contributed to the train being seven hours late out of Denver.

A crazy morning blizzard dumped close to six inches of snow. By this afternoon, the sun was shining bright as a seven hour late Zephyr kicks up snow just west of Leyden.

It is ironic, but UP 1996 always seems to show up in Colorado in winter. Fairly close to New Years, actually. 2018/2019 was no exception as the heritage unit spent a number of weeks making some trips on the Moffat on coal trains. The Daylight / Black Widow inspired unit is quickly moving toward the second-most shot heritage unit I have, after UP 1989.

Remnants of the most recent winter storm are still quite apparent in Barbara's Gulch as a westbound coal empty, with UP 1996 fifth in the consist, makes its way west.

Seven unit lead a westbound coal empty through Barbara's Gulch. UP 1996 has been hanging out on coal trains in Colorado lately, and is making yet another journey west on this particular empty!

Winter may make for cold temperatures and bad driving conditions, but it also makes for some of the best train photography! The second (Friday) run of the Winter Park Express was a bit delayed getting out of town. Which worked out perfect for me as I had just dropped off kids at school and was on my way home when it showed up!

A Canadian National C44-9W is second up on this westbound coal empty on the Moffat. The unit had actually been leading coming in to Denver, but a UP unit was placed on the point in Denver in order to meet with UP PTC requirements west of town on the Moffat.

At the west switch of Leyden, a westbound coal empty with six units on the point has a clear signal. Second out on the empty is a visitor from the north...a Canadian National C44-9W joins the cast. Interesting that a DC unit is on the lineup for a coal train.

A break in the clouds showed up just as the mid-train swing helpers, including UP 1996, rolled by the intermediate signal just west of Leyden.

Clouds move in and out of the scene at the intermediate signal west of Leyden. Fortunately, sun is shining on the five units leading this eastbound coal load.
