The train is currently tied down here, waiting on a fresh crew to come out of Denver. There are only two tracks (Coal 1 and Coal 2) at the yard in Denver that BNSF can use for trains waiting for a recrew. Under partly cloudy skies, this westbound oil train is approaching the east tunnel of Tunnel 1. It has been an exceptionally wet and cool spring, so the scenery is still very green. Quite the interesting mix. The yellow hand rails on the lead unit really pop in the scene as the train curves toward Tunnel 1. There is still some minor work happening, but all the speed restrictions have been lifted. This NS/BNSF oil train climbs the north edge at track speed. The train originates on Norfolk Southern and is turned over to BNSF. However, most of the time, the train has been running with at least a few NS units all the way to the oil transloaded facility. A CN-led grain train is currently stopped in The Sag, waiting for its turn to head south at Palmer Lake. A northbound is visible in the distance on Main 2. After several hours of thunderstorms, there was a 10 minute break in the clouds, allowing for some fantastic sunlight to break through. You can see the train is passing an intermediate signal. The train is currently operating under a track warrant as Main 2 of the Joint Line has not had CTC added to it like Main 1 has. The Q-Train has a Boeing 737 fuselage, a string of double stacks, and some general manifest freight on the train. Most likely, this train is headed to Portland or Seattle. It is waiting on the second of two northbound trains. There is a massive thunderstorm coming off from the Rockies and over Colorado Springs. Southbound loads often stop here to cool their traction motors and/or wait on northbounds. It was here that the Santa Fe main once went over the Rio Grande main. Shots from the north side of the bridge are hard to get due to lighting, but the overcast skies made it possible on this June 1st.
