BNSF has sent several loaded sand trains (for fracking) west and several loaded oil trains have rolled east. Another sand train went west on this day, headed for Wellington, UT. But the last two, even more so! The Silver Solarium (the domed car) celebrates its 70th Birthday here in 2018! As much as I love the CB&Q dome, I sure wish Rio Grande's version...the Silver Sky...could be restored. The Silver Rapids and the Silver Solarium came in to Denver on the eastbound Zephyr the previous Friday. Today, they are headed back home to California. The Zephyr is just about to receive a slow order from the dispatcher. Trains are limited to 10 MPH around Big Ten Loop at the moment due to very high winds. An occurrence not at all uncommon! As I was waiting for the westbound Zephyr, I noticed this Bald Eagle sitting on a rock near Welton Reservoir. I had to shoot through a chainlink fence which is why there is some way out of focus lines through the image. When I got out of the car to shoot over the fence, the eagle flew off. The temperature outside is only 17°F. With the wind taken into consideration, it only feels to be about 9°F out. Still, any time is a good time for the new Ski Train. Photo ID: 107157 Date Shot Photo By Friday, February 2, 2018 Kevin Morgan Location Times Viewed Winter Park Winter Park, CO 1892 (Add a Comment) Subdivision Railroad Moffat Tunnel (UP) Amtrak I include this shot of the Winter Park Express mainly to point out something interesting...note that the signal to the left of the train is showing a yellow aspect. You may ask how this is possible since the train is in the block beyond the signal! Before answer the question, also note the "R" on the milepost plate of the signal. The milepost reads as "565R". That "R" indicates this signal is a "Repeater". Not only does the signal not give any indication of the track here, it does not even give any permission to approaching trains. It simply repeats the condition of the signal at East Winter Park. This is done so westbound trains emerging from the Moffat Tunnel can know what to expect at the signal at East Winter Park. In this case, the signal is yellow because the Winter Park Express will make a reverse move behind the signal at East Winter Park. The train had to flag past the east switch because the Zephyr is still in the Moffat Tunnel at this point. The train will back up so it can get a clear signal through the tunnel.
