The standard pair of P42s lead the westbound Zephyr at the west end of Eisele (Clay), heading west right on time.

On this particular morning, a few people are enjoying a ride on the private car Northern Sky. The car was originally built in 1955 as the Union Pacific dome-lounge-observation car #9003. After going through several owners, the car was purchased in 1992 and was fully restored, turning it into the Northern Sky, which is available for charter today.

The morning Zephyr crosses over 66th Avenue in the middle of Arvada, headed west right on time! It is being led by the highest-numbered P42DC, and it was the last to be delivered to Amtrak in October 2001.

The westbound Zephyr got a late start (about an hour) out of Chicago yesterday afternoon. It lost a little more time across the plains, and is now just over two hours late as it heads west on the main track at Leyden.

The skies are mostly cloudy this morning, but there are plenty of gaps in the clouds that are allowing some blasts of sunlight to come through. One such gap opened up at just the right time, as the (on time) westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1.

The west switch of Eisele (Clay) has definitely become one of my favorite places to get shots of westbounds. There is a nice mix of pine trees and deciduous flora. The Zephyr passes by, with nine Superliners in tow.

On an unusually cloudy morning along the front range, the westbound Zephyr rolls along on the main at Eisele (Clay), right on time. Kind of nice to see a Phase 5 P42DC on the Zephyr again, as it's been a few months since I last caught one.

The westbound Zephyr is now at Eisele (clay), Big Ten Curve behind it. This is the final of three shots from this same perspective of the morning Zephyr. To see the previous shot, you can click here.

The westbound Zephyr is rounding the eastern curve of Big Ten Curve, alongside the wind break. This is the second of three shots from this same perspective of the morning Zephyr. The previous shot is here. The next shot is here.

The westbound Zephyr starts the climb up Big Ten Curve. I decided to take three shots of the Zephyr this morning from this same perspective. To see the next shot, you can click here.

The morning Zephyr meets an eastbound oil train at Rocky. DS-378 has already set up a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, and the train is getting ready to continue to Denver. Meanwhile, the Zephyr passes by the seldom-used Rocky Spur (or Rocky Flats Industrial Lead).

The morning Zephyr is running right on time today, as it rolls west through Barbara's Gulch. An eastbound oil train awaits the Zephyr in the siding at Rocky. Fortunately, DS-378 set up a good meet, and the oil train is already clear of the west switch, so the Zephyr will not be delayed.

On a beautiful Wednesday morning, AMTK 203 and AMTK 151 lead the morning Zephyr west toward the east portal of Tunnel 1. It is already 80°F (27°C) this morning, with high temperatures expected to head toward 95°F (35°C) in the afternoon. Power on the Zephyr has been pretty "regular" of late, meaning the standard Phase 5 P42DCs. Nice to see something in a different scheme today.

In the past few weeks, UP has had a splattering of slow orders on the Moffat, likely for various maintenance of way projects. One has been up and around Big Ten Curve. However, the slow order was gone this morning and the Zephyr has been able to maintain track speed since passing North Yard.

An UP MOW crew, consisting of a hyrail truck and a hyrail dump truck, are sitting in the siding at Eisele (Clay) as the morning westbound Zephyr rolls by at track speed, right on time. AMTK 203, the Operation Lifesaver unit, is on the point this today.
