UP's MGJNY is sitting on the main track at Eisele as it needs a recrew. The dispatcher working DS-380 is new to the territory, and was unaware that crews are unable to get to Eisele (by road). Fortunately, the crew will have enough time left to make it down to Leyden for a recrew there. Meanwhile, the manifest is waiting on the Rocky Mountaineer, currently climbing from Rocky.

The Rocky Mountaineer is sold out for this westbound run out of Denver. It is great to see both the GP40-3s back on the train as it slowly climbs Big Ten. There is an eastbound UP manifest on the main at Eisele (Clay).

After meeting an eastbound BNSF oil train at Crescent, RMRX 8600 (a former SD45, now an SD40M-2) heads west toward the east portal of Tunnel 19. Off in the distance, you can see Gross Reservoir is indeed growing (getting taller) as part of the project to triple the volume of the reservoir.

Too many trains and not enough track! This eastbound BNSF oil train was in the siding at Crescent, but could not fit between switches; the end of the train was hanging out the west end of the siding. Plain, Eisele (Clay), Rocky, and Leyden were all unavailable for a meet, so both the Rocky Mountaineer and the Zephyr came up to Crescent. The Zephyr got a restricting signal to follow the Mountaineer down the main. With the oil train finally able to depart east, the Rocky Mountaineer is now starting to pull to the west switch, as the Zephyr is stopped, waiting for the Mountaineer.

An eastbound UP manifest is tied down on the main, short of the grade crossing, at Plain. The manifest is waiting for a crew to untie the train and take it east to North Yard. Meanwhile, the Rocky Mountaineer rolls west through the siding.

The Rocky Mountaineer throttles down a bit as it enters into the siding at Plain. An eastbound UP manifest, the MGJNY, actually died on the main (meaning the crew hit their max hours of service). Until a new crew can come out from Denver, all trains will have to run through the siding.

The westbound Rocky Mountaineer is using the SD40M-2 and SD18M, in addition to one of the GP40-3s, for power this morning. The SD18M and GP40-3 kick up quite a bit of exhaust as the train accelerates.

After a quick crew change, the Rocky Mountaineer passes by the Grand Junction station and is on its way east toward Glenwood Springs. It is scheduled to arrive between 7pm and 8pm. Tomorrow, it will make the trip east to Denver.

The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer is briefly stopped on the main track here at Grand Junction. While no passengers get on or off the train here, it is a crew change point for the Rocky Mountaineer. The fresh crew will take the train east from Grand Junction to Glenwood Springs.

The westbound Rocky Mountaineer just knocked down a clear (green) signal on Main 1 at the west end of Gilluly. This would be the final shot for me on the two-day chase of the Mountaineer from Glenwood west toward Salt Lake City. The train would continue on from Gilluly to make it to Salt Lake City by 8:30pm.

Nearly halfway alongside the center siding of Gilluly, the Rocky Mountaineer is going around a long, sweeping, 180° curve. As amazing as Big Ten Curve in Colorado is, the loops at and around Gilluly are, in my opinion, even more amazing.

As the Rocky Mountaineer descends down the 2% grade on Main 1, it meets a quartet of UP units heading east on Main 2. Note the cut in the upper right corner of the train. This is where the Mountaineer was just a few minutes earlier.
