Coal production in the United States has been on a steady decline since 2011, with a few exceptions or spikes between 2016 and 2019. Coal production in Wyoming in the Powder River Basin is no exception, with the peak production coming in 2008 when 466 million short tons were mined. By comparison, that number dropped to 191 million short tons in 2024, and is forecasted to drop even further to 185 short tons in 2025. That's rough 40% of the peak production from 2008. Despite the decrease, there are still plenty of coal trains to be found on the Joint Line, with this southbound load making a good case-in-point just north of Sedalia.

With the implementation of the EPA Tier 4 standards in 2015, railroads have all but stopped purchasing new locomotives from EMD (Caterpillar) and GE (Wabtec). The Tier 4 locomotives available from both manufacturers are more expensive and more complicated, which has discouraged railroads from purchasing many. Most of the locomotives ordered new in the last decade have been "Tier 4 credit units". These are Tier 3 units (ES44ACs) that railroads have received from emissions credits. Both of the ES44ACHs (or ES44AHs) on this southbound coal load at Acequia are credit units, delivered in late 2023 and early 2024.

This southbound coal load is passing over the C-470 freeway and underneath the relatively new onramp from southbound US-85 onto eastbound C-470. The train is on Main 1, owned here by Union Pacific, and dispatched by BNSF.

A pair of relatively new ES44ACHs lead a southbound coal load on Main 2 along Hogan's Alley (and I-25) just a few miles from downtown Denver. This is the far north end of the Joint Line with both BNSF and Union Pacific running trains here, although both mains here are owned by BNSF.

Yard Shots BNSF, Santa Fe
Classic Santa Fe blue and yellow units are, of course, becoming increasingly rare in 2025. So, I was really happy to nab this shot of a BNSF GP39-2 (still painted in "Yellowbonnet") with a former-Santa Fe SD45-2B sitting in North Yard in the distance, waiting to be moved to Iowa. BNSF 2854 is switching some intermodal cars around at Rennicks.

At Terrell Junction on the BNSF Golden Sub, BNSF's afternoon "Beer Run" has nearly completed the 12-ish mile trip from the 31st Street Yard out to Coors Lower Yard in Golden. Here at Terrell Junction, the diverging route goes to the lower yard, while the non-diverging route goes to the upper yard. The conductors just threw the switch and is walking back to check sometime further back on the train.

Yard Shots BNSF
A BNSF yard local is returning to the 31st Street Yard, pushing back into a yard track. Meanwhile, a crew is boarding a pair of SD70ACes that are power on the "Beer Run", getting ready to depart for the Golden Sub to head to Coors.

A little GP60 action hanging around in Denver. This particular unit was originally delivered to Santa Fe in the Warbonnet scheme. In the early 1990s, Santa Fe often ran high priority intermodal trains with an A-B-B-A GP60 set.

An eastbound BNSF train arrived in the siding here at Rocky about two hours earlier and was promptly tied down. The train is setup in the standard (for BNSF) 3x(0)x3 oil train configuration. Piles of new ties waiting to be installed line both the main and the siding.

The final shot of the day for this journey to the western slope of the Moffat comes at a quarter after 4pm, here at the siding of Radium. This Provo-Denver has likely met its final westbound and should have a clear shot the rest of the way to Denver. The crew went on duty at 10:30am, giving them just over six hours to make the trip in to town.

I'm not mechanic, but I have a suspicion that the turbocharger on that third unit is either about to go out, or already has gone out, based on the impressive amount of exhaust it is spitting out as this eastbound manifest throttle up in the siding at Radium, ready to continue east toward Denver.

For the first time ever, I finally made it down to Radium for a shot of a westbound oil empty meeting and eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. I've never gone all the way to Radium before because it is a little bit out of the way from the main road that connects Kremmling to Bond. It is a 6-8 minute drive in and out of Radium, and typically I bypass it as I do not want to fall behind whatever train I might be chasing. However, with the light rapidly fading, it seemed like the perfect time for a few shots. Well worth it, too, as Radium is quite scenic.

BNSF typically runs their manifest on the Moffat in a 3x2 configuration. However, that standard has seemingly become less common lately. While there are two DPUs on the end of this eastbound, five units are on the head end. The train here is just east of Yarmony, following along the Colorado River.
